S55 Cold air Intake

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but im looking into installing either a BMS or MST Intake. Im just abit worried about how well the filters filter dust. as i live on a dirt road and ive heard before that these cone filters arnt as effective as the factory filters at dust filtration. Just something i want to consider before i purchase.
any advice is appreciated.
Regards

If you live on a dirt road then under hood cone filters are gonna suck up a ton of it. The stock ducts and airboxes help dirt and debris to fall out of the air. For your case I suggest stock airboxes with stock paper filters (still remove the carbon ones). Buy a set of stock filters from FCP Euro and use the free replacement program so you can change them frequently. Wash out your boxes when you change filters.

Even if you use "good" filters like BMC they're gonna get dirty and let particles through. Those particles go past the piston rings and into your oil. Not good.

Stock filters…change frequently.

ok thanks for the advice, was looking at doing it for the improved sound but sounds like it isnt worth the risk..
Also can you clarify what you mean by "(Still remove the carbon ones)"?
Cheers

Sometimes the OEM airboxes have an extra pleated carbon/charcoal filter above the paper filter. Those can be removed. We call that "charcoal delete".

Our filters are oiled so they will catch a ton of debris before it enters the motor which is great. However if you live on a dirty road your filter maintenance will be more. It requires cleaning and respraying with oil. If handled with care the filters should last many many years.

You shouldn't get a ton of debris unless driving behind another vehicle though but, you know the situation better than I.

in the BMW community, the "dust through the cone filter" debate may seem like an extreme thing, but if you take a look at the offroad community, you will see the topic through a different lens.

An oiled air filter and a dust sock work extremely well on my supercharged Wrangler and it seems 1000 times more dust than your car will just driving down a dirt road (unless you are tailgating someone on a dirt road the whole time).

Just a thought... Either way, you should be doing a lot of air filter maintenance or inspections to see just how caked your filters get and adjust for your specific conditions.

+1 for the filter sock. I've ran those as well and they worked great. Totally forgot about that option

Stock filters, stock boxes...they work great and most intakes are a downgrade.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I honestly think a cone filter will be fine, the only dirt road I see is my driveway which is about 700m and I go no faster than 18km/h so very slowly. And never behind anyone. Would definitely have to keep up the maintenance on it though.

Any recommendations for good quality cone filters with socks, and how often maintenance should be done on them would be appreciated.
