Aftermarket Ext. Warranty and Famous Crank Hub Issue
Hello, I have purchased a 2015 F82 from my boss that has 56k miles on it for a steal of a price. Question is I have the opportunity to purchase an aftermarket extended warranty for around $5-6k from my local BMW dealer and I am wonder how likely [from experiences / stories ]would the warranty cover a spun crank hub as that's my main concern for this car. I have only an air intake and exhaust as far as "engine related" mods. I do not want to spend $5-6k just to find out the ext. warranty company will tell me that my car is "modified" and the spun crank hub is not covered. Thanks!!!

My 2cents: I was in a similar predicament and I decided against the extended warranty. From what I've understood from my time here, these cars are pretty reliable even well past 50k miles and the only situation in which you really should worry about a CHF is if you're running a tune and/or tracking the car a lot. Therefore I decided to spend the money saved on the extended warranty buying a bunch of cosmetic/suspension parts Not sure if exhaust or a CAI would violate said warranty though.

These cars are pretty reliable and the crank hub is the only real problem these cars have. It costs less than the price of that warranty to get an aftermarket hub installed so I'd just take the money you'd pay for the warranty and have a reputable shop install an aftermarket hub and call it a day

The only other issue we've seen is the charge cooler leak. Have the reservoir checked to ensure it's holding coolant. Issues have been spotty with no apparent pattern between model years or mileage, but enough have happened that dealers are aware of the issue. BMW hasn't declared it a recall though. Good luck, it's otherwise a fantastic vehicle. Puts a smile on my face anytime I'm behind the wheel.

$5-6k would just about cover an SCH and new Intercooler. Most SCH are not catastrophic.

The cost to fix the poorly designed crank hub is a few thousand dollars (someone else can give an exact figure). The likelihood of your crank hub spinning is very small, with the limited mods you have. The cost to repair a spun crank hub I've seen can be upwards of 6k, but will also let others chime in. At the end of the day, would you spend thousands of dollars for insurance to cover 6k worth of damage, when the likelihood is significantly less than 33% change of happening? I know I won't.

UPDATE: I purchased an upgraded crank hub + bolt capture.... Car is in the shop getting everything installed. Purchased bm3 tuning software. I think I made the right move versus buying some AM warranty that could potentially deny a claim even if my CH spins.

If 33% of cars had spun crank hubs, a recall would have occurred. My guess is less than 5% and for unmodded cars less than 1%. Anything more and it would have been part of a class action lawsuit (like the 911 ims issue).
Assuming 10% fail and a $6000 repair cost, then the insured value is really only worth $600 (plus say $150 oh and profit). Buying a warranty justy for this makes little sense. For the poster, you can get a mod waiver from mosty agents. They exclude damage caused by the mods (and charge a fee for this).

There is no bad crank hub on these cars. Period.
If you stay stock it’s failure rate is almost non existent. So it’s just fine for what it was designed to do. If you plan to heavily mod then a warranty isn’t supposed to cover your engine anyway. So that’s immaterial unless you are planning to defraud the warranty. |
