Just got X5M
Hi guys,
I just got '17 X5M with 45k miles. I was wondering what are the main elephants in the room with this car? What are the main things to watch out for? Thanks! |

Congrats... break sequel issue but there's a fix for that.. other than that great platform to daily and build.
Make sure you take it to the dealer to get the entire car looked over because you still have warranty.

What is a break sequel? Is there a topic? Btw, I've been daily driving M4 for the last 5 months and the breaks on X5M do feel a little weaker than those on my M4. Idk if that's fine, as I'd image breaks on X5M are doing a lot of work stopping this heavy and powerful beast I've seen some topics here about a catastrophic engine/tranny failures. Are they more of an exception than the rule? Also, how does factory warranty work? I can just bring it for an overall mechanical inspection? Usually, do you have to pay any deductibles? Might be stupid questions but I've never had a car with factory warranty previously lol Overall, the car was 1 owner, came with full service records (bought and serviced at the same dealership); and the car looks, drives, and smells brand new. |

Search on the forum, but here are a few links to issues:
Brake Squeal - https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1535358 Wheel Bearing Issue - https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1143328 Both of these are livable, but annoying issues on a $100K performance SUV. Some people report changing to the newer OEM pads solved the problem with squeal, didn't work for me so I switched to ceramic pads; less bite, but low dust and almost completely absent squeal. Tranny and air bag issues seem to be infrequent. People complain about weak air conditioning. Cosmetically people are annoyed by the wheel gap, but many change out the suspension when modding to lower it.

Biggest elephant is scheduled maintenance costs if you don't have a maintenance plan.
I haven't hadn't any issues personally. Wheel bearings and brake squeaking seem to be the biggest complaints. Some have had odds and ends break, but I don't think there have been any trends on the engine, transmission, suspension failures, etc. Enjoy a solid SAV!

Oh yeah, I should mention that rock chips are very annoying on the side skirts, lower door trim, and wheel well mounding. Get PPF if your paint is perfect now.

Why didn't you ask BEFORE you bought the car? ;-)
Welcome! I don't drive mine much, I get the brake squeal, sounds like a school bus, very annoying. No issues with the engine or the A/C and I am in the desert. I do not have the B/O upgrade, the system is meh... Awesome car, not nearly as nimble as the M3, but it moves! Good luck! |

It's a great car. I had a F86 that had a bad oil pan leak at 65k miles and it was a 13 hour job. Luckily it was paid for by the seller (partially). I dumped it quick for a 1 owner clean carfax F85 which has had literally zero issues over 8k miles of daily driving. This platform is far more reliable than the E70. I drive mine with peace of mind and no warranty. In my opinion they are a waste on this reliable platform. Especially on a 2 year old car like yours , and you don't sound like the type who will beat the shit out of it just because it say M. These are solid. Good luck and enjoy.
