Anyone using an X5M for frequent towing?
So I'm probably daydreaming here, but I'm replacing my truck (business use), at the end of the year, and thought if I replaced it with an SUV, instead of another truck, I could get something nicer, more interesting, better to drive unloaded, etc. In comes the X5M
I'm wondering if anyone is using one of these for frequent towing around the tow max (5000-5500 lbs). Probably 65% of the miles I'd put on it would be towing, 50/50 at 1800lbs and 5000-5500lbs. Am I going to trash the SUV by putting this sort of mileage on it? Would I be replacing major components frequently? Alternatively, how do they do towing in mountainous areas? Any issues with temps, trans, etc? Any advice is appreciated. I figure this probably isn't a great idea, but I would certainly prefer to be in one of these, rather than a luxo-truck like an f-150 platinum. |

Hi, I tow an 1800kg caravan with mine quite a lot.
No issues and it doesnt destroy the fuel consumption that much either, still get 17-18mpg on a decent run. The trick is to drive it like a diesel, minimum revs and ride the torque curve. There are better tow cars out there im sure but the M is more thsn competent. Cheers Yves |

My 2015 F85, now with 95,000 km, tows four to six times a year a 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) 33 ft long trailer for some 6,000 km each year, twice yearly over the Alps.
Together with the (old) Citroën DS23, it's the best tow car I ever used, extremely stable and comfortable at all speeds. Fuel consumption is below average due to the low European legal towing speeds in most countries. Highly recommended. |

In Europe I feel the answer would be, yes you'll be fine. In the US you will be told you need a 3/4 ton truck or more. I'm in the same boat with you. I tow occasionally maybe 3-4 time a year so I want something comfortable, sporty and fun when I'm not towing. Does the X5M have rear air suspension? If so then I think you should be fine without worrying about excessive wear on the springs. The transmission and brakes with any tow vehicle will take a toll.

Air suspension is standard on the X5M..it was an option on the F15 X5.
