Tyre Life on X5M

My 2018 X5M has 8300 miles. Its just gone into the dealer for some warranty work on the rear screen (some of the elements are not working). They have done a health check on the car and told me that the front tyres are already down to 3.8mm and the rears are at 5.0mm.

The tyres have been on the car from new (Pirelli 20 inch on 611 rims), but at this rate I'll need new tyres by 10,000 miles.

Questions:
1. Why have fronts worn down quicker than the rears, I thought it would be the other way round?
2. What sort of wear are you experiencing?
3. What new 20 inch tyres would you recommend?

I just got my X5M so can't tell ya about tire longevity, but I traded in my '13 Cayenne GTS for the X5M and the Cayenne tires only lasted ~10k miles. I was told then that it's a heavy car with low profile tires and lots of power which chews through tires. Fortunately the tires would come with a 40k mile warranty so the next set was always pro-rated...

In my experience, that's pretty much on par for wear with the OEM Pirelli P Zeros.

I'm putting my winters on this weekend. My OEM 20 inch P Zeros are almost bald on the front, right down to the wear bars. They are close to the wear bars on the rear but not as bad as the front. I have about 16K km on them (10K miles).

As to why the fronts wear faster, there are many factors. This is an AWD SUV, not RWD. There is a slight front weight bias. The front tires on just about any front engined vehicle do more work, especially under braking.

I've had past, non M X5's, and they had similarly horrendous wear rates. These are heavy, heavy vehicles and part of their high performance abilities comes down to sticky tires, which sacrifice durability for grip.

As for recommendations, there have been threads on the topic, just do a search, please. Some people hate the P Zeros with a passion (I don't) and recommend other brands like Michelin, but the only brand available (at least in my area) in the OEM 20 inch size is the Pirelli. Some posters have also raised concern about insurance issues if non OEM sizes are used (this may or may not apply in your area or with your insurer).

expect short life with the 20in Pirellis, 10-12k miles. There few if any tire options to replace them with matching spec sizes, if you go down -10 in size there are a lot more options; going outside of spec may or may not be a concern for you, everything from warranty to insurance to liability are things to consider. These are heavy, high performance SAVs. All tires will wear and often the inner edge will wear faster, so you may see uneven wear on your tires. Expect to replace all 4 when you need tires.

10k miles seems very low. do you see any excessive wear on the inner parts of the tire? i have 21" mpss when i got the car at 8900 miles. i recently changed it at ~16k miles as one of the front tires was showing inner wear, perhaps from being lowered with H&R springs. with my new set of tires, i'm hoping to at least get 15k miles as well. i also noticed that the fronts seem to wear more then the rears, perhaps too much aggressive driving style

Get rid of your Pirellis ASAP and go to Michelin PSS. Better handling quieter, and longer life. I got 14k on my last rears. Fronts are at 20k

Wear on the tyres seems pretty even, not the inner edge issue, especially on the rears that I had with my old E70's.

On the 20 inch rim there only seem to be 2 options - Pirelli or Continental. Views on either?

Go to 21s with PSS, convert your 20s to winter setup.
