Specification is more important than grade. As long as you are using LL01 or LL01fe you are good to go.

I heard that bmw 0w-40 no longer have in U.S market. do you think Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil 0W-40 will work for f8x?

if your a racer ( constantly pushing the revs in the 7000+ rpm range.. go with a heavier viscosity...if not stick with your basic lite weight oils....of course exceptions do apply to cold or hot climates

I have seen long debates regarding which one is actually better for S55: LL01 or 04. Considering that the S55 is a direct injection turbocharged engine.

(summing up the debates):
LL01 should protect better, but LL04 means low ahs/SAPS and (thus) less carbon deposits on the valves.

I have used LL01 Mobil 1 0-40w for 7 years/50,000 miles in a N52 engine. No wear and no oil consumption. The engine purred like new.

Now I am using LL01 BMW M Twin Power Turbo 0-40w oil. BMW wanted to use 0-30w LL04 but I didn't let them. Brought my own oil when the run in inspection was done.

The principal recommended oil viscosity for the S55 has always been either 0W30 or 0W40 depending on which company was BMW’s primary supplier (Castrol or Penzoil).

5W30 is mentioned as an acceptable alternative. 5W30 is the primary recommended oil viscosity for non-M turbo engines and is readily available at dealers (often in bulk). It is used by most dealers to save cost under the free maintenance program on M cars. I always insist on them using either 0W30 or 0W40.

In the States, 04 is not recommended for gasoline engines.

I use what BMW specifies for the F80, which is LL-01FE 0W-30.

A 0w40 oil needs to find the right balance of viscosity. Some 0w40 oils are way too thick such as redline 0w40 and may cause crank hub issues. Some 0w40 oils are too thin and won't protect the engine well at high stresses.

I believe the oils with the right balance of viscosity and are excellent quality synthetics are as follows in ascending order:

Shell Helix 0w40 (HTHS of 4.0)

Pennzoil Ultra Euro Platinum 0w40

Valvoline Synpower 0w40

Castrol Edge Titanium Professional 0w40

If you don't track your car just stick with oem or any certified oil. I personally use amsoil 5w40 classic euro blend for all my cars and I track them all. They have a higher flash point for track use and I found it to burn less than motul when I had it in my 991.

Would go with 0W-40 in the winter and 5W-40 when it warms up. The 40 weight would give you more protection over the 30 weight. But the 30 weight would give you better MPG.

Ok what do you all think about liqui moly?

Also I’ve been burning oil like crazy the last two oil changes I had to throw 1 quart 1000 miles before the service due date. I was at minimum both times.

I push the car hard tho I mean everytime I get into it manual mode sport/sport plus and pushing it to its limits.

Liqui moly 5w-30 is what I’ve always ran in my 335i and what I’ll be running in my M4. It’s a great oil and meets all the certifications.

IMO about oil in general is that as long as it meets the weight and certification, I don't really care about brand. I would run Amazon oil if it met the certifications of BMW.
