Can I install BM3 tune without removing JB4?

I did some searching and research on this. I have seen some helpful information but have not seen a direct answer to the question. I have a JB4 tune on my F82 M4 currently. It is Stage 2. So it has piggyback connections to the TMAP, the MAP, and the OBDII. It also has the bluetooth unit.

I am inclined to think that, since these are just piggyback connections, that I can simply set the JB4 to inactive (Map 0 or Map 4) and install the BootMod3 tune over top of it. Is this safe? Will they interfere with each other at all?

My main objective is to avoid the headache of going through the engine bay and disconnecting all of the JB4 parts if it is not necessary to do. And it could be beneficial to leave the JB4 hardware installed in case myself or a future owner wants to switch back to that in the future.

No, remove the CAN wires at very least during flashing.

You can program Bootmod and most companies tunes with the JB4 connected.
I have done it many times with various tuners.
You will be fine.

Wouldn't recommend doing this as this can cause failure during flashing, as JB4 still communicates with CAN even in 0 setting.

If you have an older JB4, remove the can wires to be 100% safe.

I've been running BM3 with fully connected JB4 (TMAP, MAP, OBDII, EWG) and have had no issues to date. Like you, hesitant to dig through the engine bay and disconnect everything (at least until some other work/upgrade needs to get done), and also wanted to keep it connected for logging purposes until my BM3 wireless agent delivers. Plus, never know if it might be useful for meth/PI upgrades down the road, or if some software update from BMW temporarily renders the BM3 flash non-functional (being able to flip over to using the JB4 maps again might prove useful).

The JB4 stays on Map0; obviously, need to remove the OBD connector from the JB4 to flash with BM3. So far, multiple flashes without issue and the real-time monitoring and auto-logging functionality of JB4 is maintained when I reconnect the OBD after completing a flash. Logs with this configuration have been much cleaner than the MHD+JB4 setup I was running and the smoothness of running the DME flash tune is incredible. Best way I've been able to explain it is a feeling that the car is now functioning with 1 brain at the controls, rather than the 2 minds of the JB4 and DME trying to balance out and provide a performance boost.

Worth noting - keep in mind that if you have the latest JB4 firmware Map4 no longer serves as a safety/monitoring. It is now set up as a low boost "valet mode" map. Probably best to avoid using that one.

I'd flash my bm3 with jb4 connected,on map0, and zero issues at all.

Should not be a problem with Jb4 being on map 0, you can also disconnect the OBD connection when flashing the car and connect it once you are done

With the OBDII cable out the JB4 is off CANbus, so just change it to map0 and it's along for the ride.

What many of my flashed customers do is update the JB4 firmware, set the FUD bit for a back end flash, and then map1 becomes your flash only map where the JB4 is doing zero tuning and only allowing logging, in dash gauges, CANflap control, and stuff like that. If it's along for the ride might as well use some of it's features.

And of course BMS offers free flash maps you can load via BM3 or MHD that are specifically designed for a variety of uses like full E85 depending on what your needs behind the wheel are.

Thanks everyone. I understand now. Set it to Map 0, disconnect the JB4 OBD connector, flash the BM3 tune, reinstall the JB4 OBD connector.

Any feedback on whether or not this worked? I have JB4 installed current with Bluetooth and I want to flash my M3 with Bm3. Don't want to disconnect the JB4 plugs just yet. Just got my Bm3 license.

Just leave JB4 on map0 to start, tons of people run flash maps with the JB4. Later as you get more confident you can enable certain JB4 features for fine tuning for example.

I'm running JB4+MHD BEF. Free maps from burgertuning to work with the JB4.

Thanks so much for the info. I will give Bm3 a shot with the JB4 in Map 0. Wish me luck.

JB4 Running With BM3

I switched over to BM3 today. Running Stage 1 91 ACN. Kept JB4 installed. JB4 has to be in Map 0 if you have a newer one. The older models used Map 4 for data logging only. Not the case any more. You can still data log with the JB4 in Map 0 and connected to the OBDII port. So far so good.
