Stalling on cold start in cold weather

I've had an issue for a few weeks now where the car stalls on idle after start up , usually when sitting overnight. Temps in my garage get to around -20c , or below zero F routinely in January.

At first I thought it might be BootMod3, running a CS tune. Nope. removed that and it happened again today. Car starts just fine, no excessive cranking, runs for 3-4 seconds and Revs gradually drop and she stalls. It's never happened while driving, and I can prevent it from stalling by blipping the throttle a few times to prevent revs from dropping.

She is technically still under warranty, although previous owner had a AA tune on it, and now I'm running BM3. Any ideas? Friend said to disconnect the battery to reset ECU, although I just flashed back to stock with BM3 a few days ago to try that.

Is it just too cold for an M car?

Happened to mine sometimes if i don't have my car in the garage overnight. Even here in Los Angeles. It would only be around 40 degrees F. I brought it in to the dealer and said everything is fine. And it might just have been my tune. Maybe raise the cold start rpm a little higher? I kept the car on by blipping the throttle as well.

I can only assume when I flashed back to stock cold start delete was also removed.

PayamFSU - no aftermarket intakes. I might have to double check previous owner didn't do oiled filters.

Thanks for brainstorming guys!

ive been having the same issue as the weather has gotten a lot colder. ive reenabled cold start and its been working out better than before, but cold starts have still been stuttering.

the only other thing ive been doing to prevent the stuttering symptoms is turning on the ignition, making sure the hvac is off, then starting the engine. after i wait a few seconds i would the turn the hvac on. so far with the hvac off, stuttering has been less and less.

oh it's been way colder in winterpeg this past week :P

so mine rotted overnight in -21 with blistering wind at a hotel in kanata a few weeks ago and it didn't even stutter when it started. sounded completely normal. most cars at least struggle a bit to turn over and then idle more loudly in this weather.

i park in an underground parking lot normally so only had a few other instances where it sat in -15 or less over the past week or two but it's started perfectly normally each time.

Yea, it's been really really cold this past week. My M3 starts no problem, never the issue. Turns nice and smooth. After a few seconds, or longer sometimes - usually after the cold start idle drops back down to below 900rpm....the engine just starts sputtering and it stalls.

It was -25c in my garage on Tuesday. I started the car before I went to bed at night and it definitely helped with the idle in the morning. That same day I left it out at work for about 9 hours , it was -35 out that day, she again started no problem, but idled like absolute SHIT. Actually threw a check engine light on the next start.

The check engine light went away, and ever since I've been starting the car once during my shift if it's colder than -20 out.

I'm not sure if it's worth putting up with, but I've flashed back to stock, and have the car going in to dealer Monday to see if there's anything obvious on their end that should be done.

Cheers for all the responses.

No issues starting up my car on 93, E30, E60 or Full E85 in under 20F
But I have cold start OEM since I'm still on OEM cats.

Lights off, HVAC off, turn ignition once without brakes turn back off and turn once more wait 15seconds, press brake and start up car.

Maybe just rotate the gas or brand you're using as well.

20f is a balmy winter day where I'm from. Most days in January our daily high is below zero F. Last week we hit -40f

Report back from dealer:

Initially "no it shouldn't do that. We'll check it out".

After "Everything is totally fine. Fueling, etc is fine. ECU is getting confused because it's so damned cold out. Try and keep your battery fully charged, or increase ambient temp in your garage".

Still annoying me most mornings. The cuttoff for me seems to be around -15c/5f garage temp. Any lower than that and I can expect a stall within 30 seconds of her starting up.

Keeping the battery well charged in this temperature is def. a good thing especially if your car isn't a daily driver and sits a lot. $85 Ctek Lithium battery charger is cheap maintenance imo.

There was one day where it was super cold outside and my car started up but idled slightly lower than its normal cold start rpm. Started up fine but i did notice that it didn't "roar" to life like it usually does. Never stalled or anything weird though. Clutch just feels spongy until the temps warms up a bit.
