S55 Stg 1/2: How does the Transmissions Hold Up?

Hello,

I am currently waiting to order my M2C and going over the oh so beaten to death decision between a manual and DCT

I am going back and forth so much that right now I am leaning manual just because it’s a no cost lol

I am also thinking of down the road post warranty modifications and tubes. So how do the two transmissions hold up post stg 1 or stg 2 tunes with an extra 100 torque?

Thx

Been running STG2 for 2.5k on my m2c. I have most the VRSF bolt ons completed. Just waiting on exhaust and fmic/tmic. It has been locking up great and word I have got from every reputable shop but maxpsi (still never got my call back) is they hold 650-700whp on the stock trans. The DCT is superb and I wouldn't chant it unless I had too (crazy build requiring new ECU).

I inquired at EAS a few months ago about a DCT clutch upgrade and was told the same thing....stock ones (after flash tune to increase clamping force) seem to hold up fine unless pushing insane power levels

Purely depends on day to day use - drag racing will be the hardest on clutches, street driving never sees the amount of abuse vs competition/racing.

I've seen manual clutches start to slip around the ~700whp mark on our dyno, while DCT holds strong. For how long? It's anyone's guess. In the end, it will depend on your particular style of driving in most cases.

After STG2 u will never really start pulling in first gear. U hit it hard in third and it gets squirrelly. I usually start at a solid roll in second or third 3/4 throttle, slowly apply more throttle, and just try to keep it straight.

I think that if u start from rolls like this it will conserve the clutch and there is little sense in burning in first or second gears when u can easily break traction in third.

If I were to upgrade it would b a Dodson clutch though. I would opt for dct if I were u.

I was looking into this when I ordered my m2c (went with manual). Harder to find info about the manual but a fair few on here with 600hp+ with no issues. So don't think that ability to handle tunes should be your deciding factor, unless you want 750+hp / want the best 1/4 mile numbers. Get what you'll find more fun / enjoy more!

Thank you for all the responses!

As of right now I think I am going with the manual. I was just worried that in the manual the stock clutch might not hold that much needing to be switched out and lose the feeling.

My other worry was that with the increased torque of the S55 post tune may cause havoc with the feel of the manual. I have heard the M2C S55 is tuned right now to have more linearity than in the M3/M4 so maybe the manual shift wouldnt' be too bad. If I were to tune it I would try and just get a custom tweaked one to keep the same curves just at higher numbers.

Anyone here with experience with the tuned s55 and manual shifter feel?

Which year F8X? There's a marked diff in driving feel between an older F8X and a newer F8X ZCP. My '18 feels like a hammer and revs up as smoothly as anything I've owned; all NA vehicles including two AP1 S2000s new and a 997 GT3. I've also put 40K miles fresh from factory '04 M3 which absolutely requires an SSK. The rubbery BMW throws made DCT a no brainer for me.

Enjoy your M2 whichever tranny you choose.
