Wheel upgrades - 18 to 20
First - I see lots of posts about 21's and other things like that, but I can't seem to find anything on upgrading a X5 with the bare bones 18" 446's with larger wheels when you have no fender flares. Is there one I am just missing? Not a popular post I am sure, but figured it had been covered? Can't seem to find any pics. Car had what I wanted except the wheels, which are easier to upgrade than seats, etc.
I'd like to go with a 20" square set up. Not decided on the ones I will get - but found some replica 375 and 612 that come in a 20" x 10" wide with a 40mm offset - standard front offset of OEM 375 if what I have read is true. If I do my math right - these wheels would stick out .98622" further from the hub than my current 18's. But I have a 255 width tire on now and if I go with a 275 tire on those 10" wide wheels - that is only .63622 further out than my current tire tread. On the back that would fit easily and actually look better (like adding a spacer) but the 18's fit pretty flush (no flares on mine remember) and I wonder how bad it would look? Like sticking way out or just a shade over. Anyone done it that has picture maybe??? Don't worry about throwing mud, or what wheels, or anything like that - just the fit. I want a square set up for rotation and tire life - so I don't want a staggered one - not to mention those 315 tire prices..... lol I'd like a 20" to give me a little more room for side wall to prtect the ride as much as I can. Surely someone on here is driving such a critter?

Here's a photo of a square 275/45 setup with 20" 375 replicas and without fender flares. Yes, the profile is 45 instead of the standard 40. I'd say that the front is ok as well. However, I'm not able to confirm the width of the wheel or the offset any time soon.

Having seen my 21s without flares, you would def be ok with 20 square setup.

Wow, perfect picture! Thank you! I agree, they seem fine, but those tires seem a shade narrow for the wheels....ill have to do some research on that. I thought a 275 would be good on a 10" wheel. Thanks again!

I agree. The standard width for the narrower 20" wheels is 10", and 275 should be ok on that. I've been wondering whether the replicas (I have) are wider than that resulting in the stretched look. And maybe the slightly higher profile has an effect as well. Something to think about when I buy a new set of tyres in the spring.

The pics are from my previous 2014 35i. My current X5 is a 2015 35d which looks exactly the same, so I never took new pics of it. I had though about adding the lips. But after driving around for a while without them, I got to like the squared look.

Are those a staggered set up? Wider on the rear than the front I mean?
