Reinstalling exterior door handles

Hey folks,

I know this is a possible dumb question. How do you reinstall the exterior door handles? I was able to remove it but when reinstalling I am not able to. The door handles need to get behind the metal latch mechanic. But I do not know how to bring that latch closer to the exterior and fit the handle back on.

I made a makeshift hook from a long piece of metal
It has to be rigid enough not to bend when you pull back on the latch that's behind the handle
I did it with a skewer stick like this(see picture) as I had no time to go look for an actual tool
There is probably tools you can use but if you are short on time you can make something similar it will work
