Track Accident

Hey Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with insurance and an accident on the track?

Unfortunately last weekend during a lapping session I lost the rear end of the car and put it into a bit of a slide... pretty much hitting the wall while still carrying forward momentum... another two feet of track and I would have been fine. Driver side is scrapped front to back, side airbags went off, etc.

Because it was just a lapping session as part of a drivers club with instructors, I think insurance should cover it. It's currently flagged and I've been assigned an investigator. Based on all the research I've done, it is a grey space. Policy states "race" or "speed test".

Because the lapping session isn't timed, there is point by passing, no start / finish line. I'm thinking I should be OK. And based on some case law I found from a Porsche Club accident in TO, insurance did cover the incident.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I hope you will be covered...... but in my mind tracking even during a lapping day without timing/race = no insurance

Let us know how it goes for you and best if luck to be covered

I know there is separate insurance you can purchase for driver instruction training days for certain Porsche events, but I don't think your regular insurance would cover you.

And if they did, I'd be worried about them cancelling on you or increasing your premium significantly.

Who are you insured with?

There is no point comparing different policies, especially in different provinces unless you have the exact same wording.

You are lucky if you only have the timed event exclusion, most here in Ontario have the "racetrack" exclusion which would apply regardless of timing or not.

There is track day insurance but it ain't cheap.
It's a tough call. That is why I prefer professional long established schools like bmw.
Less of a chance of a wahoo driver who thinks he's in a race hitting you.

I've had these happen with private lapping days like touge who doesn't enforce dangerous driver infractions.

Which lapping day or school was this?

Here in Ontario unless there is rider excluding "Track Use" like which Chubb Insurance sends to their higher end clients, you are covered by your normal street car insurance but are excluded if the event has timing or racing.I know this for sure as I had an incident at CTMP of $27000 that was covered by my Insurance.Expect a fair bit of pushback but if you keep pressuring the Insurance you will get it covered.

I'm not sure. They may be. But the point I was making is that I find the drivers act more responsibly and the schools doesn't tolerate shenanigans.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

I was lapping with a pretty reputable club out here. We use a point to pass system, works really well and everyone is really respectful.

Let you know what happens.

As mentioned, insurance policies vary by province. In QC and Ontario, as long as you were not racing or being timed (aka driving education) you should get it covered but the insurance company might exclude coverage on race tracks in the future.

Good luck OP.

My understanding is that in Quebec, the language in auto insurance policies is regulated by the government and cannot be amended by insurance companies. So no insurance company can add language that excludes track use per se. However, if they know you track your car, it is in their right not to take you as a customer in the future.

The policy itself cannot be changed, however they could add an endorsement saying that they will not cover you if you're on a "racetrack". Similar to how there's the "valeur à neuf" endorsement, extra expenses for rental car, etc.

As far as I know, all those endorsements are also standard across all insurance companies governed by the same regulation. I'm not a lawyer, maybe experts in insurance laws can chime in.

Still being investigated by insurance. Haven't heard anything from them yet... put a phone call in this morning.

I'm optimistic based on some comments from members and some additional research.

Will update as soon as I hear from them.

There have been reported cases in Quebec for track damage including a total loss of a vehicle that insurance covered so there's that. Also I find it prudent to advise your insurance company of the exact nature of the events PRIOR to going out. In my case they bumped my annual premium by a couple hundred dollars and on days where I am at the track my deductible goes up in case of an incident. This way I have my mind at ease knowing that I have coverage in writing. Your mileage may vary though as some insurance companies will flat out say no to coverage if asked beforehand as was the case with one of my pals.

OP I wish you a speedy and favorable resolution
