I would love a way to put the transmission back in D mode without having to tap the shifter to the right. In M-Sport models, pulling both paddles OR pulling and holding the right paddle gets the transmission back into D without having to touch the shifter. Is there any way to code the M to do this?

Those are different transmissions.

I’m well aware of that, but we’re only talking about a programming change that would allow the paddles to dunction differently.

If the transmission doesn't have that functionality, no amount of coding is going to change that. Different transmissions, designed by different companies, IIRC.

Since the transmission lever is an electronic device, tapping the it to the right simply produces an electrical signal that the computer uses and interprets as a command to go into "D" mode. Since the paddles are also electronic devices used to control the transmission, it is theoretically possible that the coding exists to alter the way they behave. This is what I am asking.

I understand that they are completely different transmissions produced by different companies, but this feature seems like it would be simple to add by BMW if they desired.

I talked to the folks at BimmerCode about this feature and they tell me it is not possible.

I figured it wasn't going to be able to be coded.

On a side note, I test drove a M5 Competition the other day. It functioned the way I liked. Of course, the new M5 has a ZF transmission and not a DCT.

Yes, the M5's ZF transmission is a torque-converter automatic, not a dual-clutch manual, and has entirely different programming. Besides using both paddles to go into neutral on the M-DCT, another handy feature would be a way to go into "Park" without turning off the engine while in Drive or Reverse.

FYI, coding can only change or enable/disable pre-programmed options present in a vehicle's control modules. There's no capability to rewrite a module's programming to add functionality that isn't a factory option.
