How much was your "Doc Fee" ?
Hello,
So I haven't been in the market for a new car in a long time and after looking over the details and fees I noticed one called doc fee. I understand that it's a fee the dealers charge for the paperwork labor and that in some states it's capped but in most states it's not capped. I've also read that it's sometimes negotiable but I was just wondering how much you all paid in doc fees and which state or city you are from? There seems to be a wide range from $75-$2000?!!? Just wanted to get a feel for what you all paid. Also how much did you pay for registration fee? Thanks Last edited by Atomicchicken; 07-03-2018 at 06:29 PM.. Reason: Misspelling |

Local dealers to me in FL have a 'pre-delivery service fee' of $799. Doc fee I have paid from my last few deals have been $80 from CA dealers.
The doc/delivery fee you may find pre-printed on the contracts as they are not negotiable. (If one customer gets it waived or discounted, then the dealership sets themselves up for legal trouble as they would have to give the discount to everyone.) What one can do is request additional discount off sales price taking the doc/delivery fee into account. |

Thanks for your input. Wow, I never realized how expensive the doc fees could get. I guess its because up until now I have always bought cars in California and I've always dreaded and felt a huge sting with sales taxes but never even noticed doc fees. I guess its because doc fees are capped in California at $80 which wasn't even on my radar but I recently bought a car in Hawaii and I was soooo looking forward to the much lower sales tax and when I checked to relish the lower sales tax figure I noticed the doc fee as it was at $395. At first I didn't think much of it but after doing a little bit of research on the net I found out that the fee greatly varies and most states do not cap it. I guess its not much considering the total cost of the car and its not on a sliding scale but its still a cost that I wasn't really thinking about. I am sure we all are always looking for ways to try to save as much money as we can and ever penny counts right?
Please keep them coming as I would like to hear more from others how much they paid for doc fees. |

Back in CT on my 4 BMW deals (from 2 different dealers) doc fees were around $400 or so. Now in CA they are capped at $80. As others mention it really is pure profit for the dealer, so that is to be taken into account when making your offer.

$50!?!!?!?!?!!!!!!!
Did you negotiate for that price? According to your profile it seems you are from Seattle, Washington. If that's the case then the average doc fee in WA is $150 which in itself is not bad compared to the national average but $50!?!!?!?! Damn.......that is a sweet deal...hehe. |

I paid over $900 at Global Imports in Atlanta. Never again. You can google the avg doc fee in your state. In GA, it’s around 500. I fell for the line that they all charge the same.
Another thing to watch out for is the registration fees. They had over $500 on there for that when it only costs $125 at the dmv. They had a few other fees on there that I had them take off but I definitely screwed up on the doc fee. |
