Question for e40 owners
How do you folks find the e40 hybrid on snow?
I always wondered when driving on snow the electric mode should be the last to use because of the instant power delivery and torque. I am in Ireland so no snow for now but wondering if any of you folks can share your any experience and advice for driving on snow with the e40. |

I've driven the X5 40e in snow, slush and ice up to about 6-10" accumulation with Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 275/40R20 315/35R20. The car handles just like a non-hybrid AWD. The PHEV drivetrain doesn't create any additional issues. I don't change from Auto eDrive + Comfort mode in snow. Some people like to use Eco Pro mode in snow, but I never did. I did notice that in deeper snow and slush the 315 wide rear tires can hydroplane pretty easily starting around 40 mph.
FWIW I've also driven the 330e in snow, slush and ice up to 4" deep with Pirelli Winter Sotozero Serie II 225/45R18 255/40R18. That car handles just like non-hybrid RWD. Just like the X5 40e the PHEV drivetrain doesn't create any additional problems. Obviously the RWD doesn't get as good traction as the AWD in the snow, but it's very manageable.
