I don’t like BMW’s engine sound enhancement trend
BMW has recently started this sound enhancement thing with their previous F10 M5, current F80 M3, and new F90 M5. In one word, this trend is ‘horrible’. I’ve sat in a new M3 and it sounds awful. In just 10 seconds, I was able to make out that the sound is fake. Sitting in the driver’s seat and revving the engine sounded very nice, but when I rolled down my window, I was shocked. It was nowhere near as loud as projected through the speakers. Even on the drive, it sounded very fake. The car is very impressive over all, but the fake sound thing was a huge turn off.
It is actually becoming an industry trend now. Even the Audi TT uses it to attempt to sound better. |

It's called Active Sound Design. Most of us code ASD OFF because it is horrible and annoying. My M3 came with an MPE which is deep and loud so it sounds good to me. Not V8 good, but good, loud, and aggressive. It should never have come with ASD.
