Best and Cheapest Battery for 128i

Guys,
My car died on me in the middle of the city and it's time to get a new battery. What is the best AGM (I am assuming is the best type) of battery to get and where can i find it?

I found this one at my local store. I would like to purchase a battery and get it coded at my local coder.

https://www.pepboys.com/product/deta...03.0L%2520DOHC

* I bought the battery in the link above and had it registered at a local BMW/Mini race shop for $81.00 (Tax Incl)

The one you have linked seems to be a good one. And download INPA if you have a windows laptop and code it yourself. There are lots of DIYs out there. Also if you have MHD I'm pretty sure you can register the battery from that app.

"Best" is a meaningless term without clarification:

--maybe you want the lightest battery, in which case you would use a couple lbs of high discharge lithium

--maybe you need tons of capacity to run your hydraulics, so you have a huge 300lb battery bank in the car

--maybe you want an easy battery to buy and install, which could be a cheap generic lead acid from walmart

--or maybe you're on a serious budget, in which case the "best" battery is the one you swap out of your friend's pickup that sits in his driveway for free

--maybe you want the longest lasting battery, which would be lithium and expensive

Wow thanks for the info. I am on a budget, not looking for one to run hydraulics. Lighter would be nice but not mandatory.

Can you post a diy link using the INPA software and necessary hardware? Will the MHD app work with the N52 engine?

For MHD I doubt you need a DIY the app is pretty self explanatory. Just put your device in airplane mode, connect it to the car, open MHD, and go thru the menus until you find the register battery option.

I don't think the mhd works with the n52 engine. If you have INPA look it up on google and it should be there. Best of luck

Ok. I got the software. Now I have to get the cable. Is the process to use the AGM battery the same as using the original battery. Or will the software have an option to switch the ecu to use it? Any recommendations on where to get the best cable?

There are two or three battery manufacturers in the US. There are hundreds of battery brands. You do the math.

I think there is an option to select either AGM or flooded cell when you register, but I'm not positive.

I think it's obvious he wants the cheapest OEM style replacement.
