Just out of curiosity, why would someone by a 100+k car and sell it right away? you would lose so much on taxes alone???? Unless this was a raffle ticket prize I can?t make sense of this.

When they were released, BMW committed 300 cars to the USA market.
Once they were pretty much all sold, BMW produced 100 extra cars and sold them to dealers. Many of the people who would be in the market for an expensive, rare car produced mainly for track use are either racers, or collectors. To be blunt, the collectors are pissed off since BMW went back on their word and produced an extra 100 cars all of which came to the US market. To illustrate, there are approximately 70 cars showing as available on autotrader almost everyone by a dealer. If BMW produced 100 less cars like they stated in their press releases, there would be no cars for sale other than people or dealers selling at large markups since demand would far exceed supply like it did before the extra cars were made. In any event, once these extra cars are sold it should be very difficult to get a car for a reasonable price. Maybe a few months, maybe a year but it will happen. It's just simple basic economics.

To be honest, I bought it to drive a few miles then sell it for what I paid or even more since there were so few cars produced. I am actually going to profit on the tax since any sale will be placed legitimately through my dealer as a trade in for another vehicle. I paid 6% tax but will receive 7% for my trade in since our tax rate went up this year.

Totally accurate. The European market got the original allocation with no extras made and all the resales are above $200,000.
Only a matter of time.
In the mean time, I am enjoying mine and not keeping it in storage.

They should be. In this case 100 extra cars is more than 30% of original production number. Maybe you should sit on it if you can.

It does not make sense to wholesale (trade in) the car. There are plenty of people on the forum and elsewhere who would buy the car from me verses a dealer at the "right price". In fact, the way I have things set up, the buyer can receive the benefits of buying from a dealer (such as financing, ease of title work etc.) without having to pay for it since I am working with a dealer to perform the transaction which would allow me to preserve my sales tax credit on a trade in.

Typically the out of state buyer is better off completing this purchase as a private party transaction (tax purposes). I would hope that a person shopping for a 100k car does not have to rely on a dealer to secure financing. So unless you want to buy the car as CPO there is really no reason to go with the dealer.

We are talking about ~10k tax liability (plus dealer fees) that you have to consider. Someone has to pay that... either the new buyer as a sales tax on the purchase, or you when you don't claim that deduction as your trade in.

Good luck with the sale.
