Help! Shift knob removal...

I am trying to change out my shift knob for the F10 M5 knob, and I can't get the old one off. I literally hurt my back trying. It will not budge. I feel like I'm going to rip the whole linkage out. Is there a trick to this? I've read all the "put it in 2nd and pull hard" threads, but I've tried all that. Is it possible to do damage if pulling too hard? Any tips/tricks/recommendations? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Once you popped the gaiter ring off, flip the gaiter over the knob such that its leather on leather and your hand is now around the suede inner of the gaiter and knob and then pull up (if that makes sense). The leather on leather and your hand around the suede inner should give you more purchase. Just don't knock yourself out when it releases and make sure you disconnect the wire for illumination first!

Straddle it, one foot on each side so you are centered and pull. Its not hard. Just don't punch yourself. You might want to unclip the boot and disconnect the wiring first.

Thanks. I did try this. Maybe I'm a weak sissy I guess. And the wire is disconnected. Right now the battery is disconnected for the winter, but when it gets warmer, I'll try the stand through the sunroof and pull into your nut sack method. Then I won't need to worry about making babies.

It will come off. Put it in 2nd gear and grab with both hands and tug hard. I found it easier to pull back hard and abruptly in a quick burst! Good luck!

I sat on the centre armrest with one foot on each seat and pulled hard. Popped off in 2 seconds. Try that. Maybe I got lucky.
