Oil Usage
Is it normal for the X5M/X6M to use oil? When I got it was full, I now have 1k miles and it is near the Min mark on the iDrive when I measure the oil.
Thank you. Eric

I am almost at 5k miles and I have not added any oil since the 1200 mile break-in service.
I agree that it seems a little early for oil consumption. |

Talked to my friend that is a tech for the dealership I bought it and both the N63 and the S63 engines use oil when breaking in. I remember my M3 did too. He told me to put 1/2 qt. and it is all good. It wasn't all the way down to the min mark, so we are good.
Thank you everyone.

Having the essentially same engine in the M5 and having kept up with this issue on the M5 board I am not remotely surprised you had to add some oil. Just keep an eye on how often this is occurring.

mine burns oil and I followed the break in procedure. Its just the nature of this engine. All of my turbo bmw's burned oil. I make it a habit to check it whenever i'm waiting around for my wife which is usually at least once a week.

1st service at 1200 miles. Just past 6000 miles (roughly 5000 miles since the change) had to add 1 quart. Just went past 10,000 miles and nothing more has been added. 2nd service now scheduled.

mine was about the same. Added about a quart after the 1200 mile service and I am just shy of 6K miles now.

I added first quart at 5400 miles, and second quart at 8100 miles... only 2700 miles later! I thought this seemed a little excessive. I dropped the car off for oil service yesterday (at 8500 miles) and asked the SA who informed me that anything above 750 miles is within spec for the V8 twin turbos. That seems crazy... even my 40 year old Porsches don't burn that much oil!

I didn't have to add a quart until I was at 12-13k miles or so. Just as I was heading on a road trip with the family. Great timing! And finding the right oil wasn't the easiest thing either.

I have had 2 M cars the past 6 years. Relative aggressive break-in on both. Several hard pulls to red-line. According to on board computer have never burned any oil in either vehicle. Gauge always shows right at Max. Something to think about.

I had to add 1 liter of oil 2 days ago , at 77 000 km (47 845 miles).
My car is going in for service in less than 2000 km , so I think everything is normal. |
