Alternator sending 17 volts.. Help :)
First question, do our cars have voltage regulators separate from the alt or are they built in?
I'm getting Christmas tree lights on my cluster, but they are intermittent. I have tried the IBS unit, no go. If the alt is overcharging it doesn't seem like I would need a new alt, but I don't know. I know on older BMW's the volt reg was the cause of most alt problems but with this car I can't seem to find a part number for the volt reg by its self. So, maybe it's built into the alt?? I would like to try the reg first before dropping close to 600 bucks on a new alt. Anyone have experience with this problem Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't have your problem, but I replaced alternator when mine stopped charging the battery. I tried swapping just the new voltage regulator first and that didn't help. Put new voltage regulator back on new alternator and installed and all good again. Alternator was stupid expensive even for the random 3rd party remanufactured version. New OEM would have been double stupid expensive.

Thanks for the response! Do you happen to know the part number for the voltage regulator?
Thanks buddy!
