Lost my launch control virginity

We'll sort of.....

5000 miles over 7 months and I decided it was way overdue to test out this feature in my M4. Yesterday I did my first little burnout pulling away from a standstill, nothing spectacular just turned DSC off and intentionally pulled away with a heavy foot, made a bit of a squeal and little puff of tyre smoke, no incidents...I was happy with that.

So with my new found confidence of DSC off driving, I ventured off piste on my route home from Tesco down a generally quiet and straight for miles B road. Stopped the car in a position where I could see there was nothing coming for a good half mile either way and set to task.

Sport +
Gears lvl 3
DSC off
Left foot brake
Right foot planted
Saw the flag symbol in the display.....getting excited now....
Dropped revs using cruise control to 2500 aaaannnndddd lift off brake

Massive and I mean MASSIVE burnout...clouds of tyre smoke everywhere.
90degree left swing, 90degree right swing without exaggerating probably a 5 or 6 second burnout.. I must have moved about 20 feet through all of this.

Shit my pants, let off gas and poodled home happy in the thought that I wasn't doing this "at the lights" trying to impress anyone.

Not sure what went wrong, tyres were 37 degrees weather was around 17 ish, I guess just too many rpm I'll drop it right down next time I try this..

Just needed to share, I decided telling the Mrs about my antics wouldn't have gained me any brownie points. Lol

: quality... So what you actually found out is that LC gives you neither a good launch or any control !! When you say you adjusted the revs in the cruise control toggle I'm not sure I get you...? I thought the revs were supposed to stick at 4K until you took your foot off the brake? I think I need to try this myself

Yep, all the control of riding a wild stallion bareback lol. It defaults to 4K when you engage LC but you can lower the launch rpm using the cruise control speed toggle thing on the left of the steering wheel, between M1 and M2. In theory with road launches you drop it down so you get traction....didn't work lol

Try it but make sure you have plenty of wiggle room to fuck it up

How you press the accelerator pedal changes the way LC works. It seemed you activated the "smokey burnout function" (yes, really).

Since we had some time to talk to BMW officials at the Show we simply had to ask them for a bit more info on the matter, like how to use it. As it turns out, it’s very simple.

Basically, it’s just like activating Launch Control but with a slight difference. When you activate LC you have to press the acceleration pedal to the floor, beyond the kick down pressure point, however you like. Remember this, it’s important.

The Smokey Burnout is activated just the same only that on cars that have this function, they way you press the gas pedal matters. If you press it gradually (slowly) you’ll activate launch control. If you smash it (press it hard and quick) you’ll enter the Smokey Burnout mode and you’ll burn a lot of rubber.

This is great info, would love to have seen the attempted launch it sounds epic

I had launch control on the 911 and it was great, it worked every time and didn't have a burn out feature so you could stamp away

Will have to try it with the m4 when I get it..

Interesting one to try with the Laptimer app.

If you are going to test LC, you may as well plug your phone in and switch the app on.

Good plan. I'll also stick my GoPro on the rear wheel arch

Good man. I'd love to see if we could get the M3 0-60 under 4 secs. All in the name of science.

Some in 335d xdrives on f30post have got 4.0secs. We need to kick their asses.

How would I measure the speed. Will the Mlaptimer app do that?

M L/C is a load of rubbish, smokey burnout mode? Just make it launch the car!

I haven't bothered with it on mine past experience tells me you're better to just progressively put your foot down.

I'm one of those people that given a button to press will press it. I'm not looking to actually use LC much just one nice launch to tick the box would be nice. Plus I HATE the continentals. I've got mpss up front so need to burn up these rears.

Brilliant OP!

I'm starting to drive more and more in the dry with the TC off to point M2 now is set to that rather than MDM now - have now changed M1 to wet press on setting (with MDM most definitely on) and M2 to dry - rest of time just use default setting. Getting fed up with MDM cutting power on slower stuff and really starting to get confidence with the car. Makes a HELL of a lot of difference and the car is so much quicker. Not sure how long rears are going to last at this rate.....

Haven't tried LC - must do so in interests of research. Find best to just get car rolling and then apply welly. I avoid S3 as just unsettles things unless you back off momentarily.

Must get the vbox on the car at some point....

Wanna see a smokey burn out in an M4?!!!!

Fast forward to 2:07. Those tyre marks look like 50-60 yards long.
