235 width Front with 255 width Rear?

Hi im new to the forum and apologize if this has been posted already but i have a 2010 135i m-sport and currently running a setup 225/40/zr18 front and 255/35/zr18 rear on the stock wheels and they are michellin's. Its time for me to replace my front tires and im wondering if i can go up to 235 in the front and keep the 255 width in the rear?? Im trying to get a little bit more of a wide aggressive look but dont want to lose to much performance. Would this be ok? Any help is appreciated Thanks!

Hard to get a 235 with matching diameter to a 255. People have done 235/265, although technically they're fitting wider than recommended tires for the stock wheels.

Ahh ok thanks! so i guess thats a no :-/ but Id like to move up to 235/265. I love how that looks but i feel ill need new wheels. A shop already told me the size I have now is pushing it and the middle tread is going to wear faster than anywhere else

Check the specs of the tires compared to the specs of the rims. Tire rack will have the recommended rim width listed for all their tires. Good idea to stay within the recommendations.

For 135i stock rim sizes 7.5x18 front, 8.5x18 rear, 225/255 IS the max you can go. Confirmed this with Google sites everywhere when I personally made that switch.

Yup, 225/40-18, 255/35-18 are the max. on stock wheels, but depending on the brand the footprint can look wider than other brands do.

My new Michelin PSS have a more squared off look than my previous set of Bridgestone S-04's.

Do some reading on this site and you can get good idea as to which brand ...etc. that looks and handles best.

Well no, it's not the max one can go.

Plenty of people are running 235/265 on stock wheels. And you can certainly smash on even larger than that (autoxers do, for example)

It's simply beyond the manufacturer's recommended rim widths for those sizes.

Not that I'd recommend doing it, but it certainly can be, and is, done.

I ran 235/40 on the 261 with stock suspension with RE-71s with no problems. For me it was an improvement over the standard 225/40.

What about 225/40 matched with 265/35? Any issues other than a slightly different larger OD?

I mean, on stock wheels, the 265 is over the recommended wheel width range.

So there's that if it matters to you...and the fact that you're introducing even more understeer into an already badly understeering car...if you're concerned about that at all.

I have 18x8 and 18x9 wheels. Just looking for maximum traction as my 255/35 MPSS really aren't cutting it for the street

I don't run stock wheels but I run 225/40, 265/35 with Michelin PSS and it handles just fine and perfect. And I even got the ECS 28MM solid front sway too.

I thought that was the basis for whether it is recommended. If the manufacturer says no, there is a reason.

225 on fronts. 255 on rears are perfect for this car.

You're right but a 265/235 will work fine. I have a buddy that runs 265 R888s on a 8.5 inch wheel. I told him no way blah blah but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. For most tires a 265 is no biggie on the stock wheels and I've run PSS and V12 EVO in that size on them iirc.

There is a difference between what is recommended, and what one can (and do) and can't do. I'd think that would be clear. A majority of [people on this forums modify their cars outside of what is "recommended" afterall.

225/255 are good sizes for stock wheels, but they are far from perfect for this car as a whole.

With 50/50 weight distribution, perfect from a handling perspective would be a square setup. The car understeers a ton on 225/255s.

From a straight line traction perspective, larger rears than a 255 are more advantageous.
