ceramic brakes pad wear

how are people with CCB's and doing some tracking getting on with their pad life?

my car has done 15k just, and did 4 trackdays last year, last being in october, after the last track day my front pads were reading 140k left on idrive.

ive looked today and now they are on 25k! rears 140k. so front need replacing

is this about right? wear wise for font pads? for those sort of miles and track days? (disregarding the silly idrive numbers)

about to replace mine for the first time. 10k miles with 6 track days. Hopefully, FTS will chime in. He has the most experience with this. As far as I am concerned, your number sounds about right for fronts according to my experience. I have found that pad wear increased as pad thickness decreased. I am changing out at half pad thickness for track use.

Those numbers don't mean anything in the I drive. Pop them out and measure them. They don't need to be replaced until you're at 3mm friction material.

I've had cars that said brakes due in 3000 miles. Pop the pads. Nope. New sensors and service intervals reset.

You don't have free maintenance on the CCB pads so it's not costing you anything to measure.

I hear it is best not wear down CCB pads too much as thin pads can overheat the rotor surface and cause oxidation of the rotor. That is why some folks recommend swapping out CCB pad when worn 50~70%. It is quite less expensive to replace pads than the CCB rotors.

In my research on CCB's and track use life 50% is the point that pads should be changed out to conserve the rotors. This is of huge importance to me as I have a GTS coming and there was no choice in brakes.I know of a few people who track with CCB's who have used this pad replacement procedure and have never changed a rotor out with many years of use.

yea mine are about 50% done by looking at them, the angled corners are gone.

gonna get them changed!

i was looking at aftermarket pad options, but ive now read somewhere that the OEM compound pads are soft as to not damage the surface of the disk? and better performing aftermarket pads might cause damage?

just had an email direct from Pagid. they have the M5 pad in RSC1 compound what will fit the m4, but the pad has 9mm more rubbing depth, but apparently the M4 caliper can accommodate that, and they also have a rear M4 specific pad in RSC1 compound also avail, so a full set of RSC1 pads are avail for the M4, just waiting to hear on price

well I have just changed the front pads on my CCB'S with OEM pads, decided against the pagid because risk of faster rotor wear (pads were at 50%) and today for the first time ive noticed some pitting on the wear indicators?

the car has done 15k miles, and 4 track days last year, but i wouldnt say i drive at 10 10ths on the track.

I have had a look at some posts on ferrari and porsche forums that say this sort of wear on the indicators is nothing to worry about, but can anyone with experience of CCB's give their view?

here are the wear indicators on the front rotors

initially i thought that maybe the dealer had sent the wrong pads? and the pads were for irons not CCB, but i have checked the part numbers on the invoice and they are the correct numbers for CCB pads (plus i cant imagine they would fit if they were not CCB specific pads?)

but they do look different to the oem pads slightly?

so yea, if anyone with CCB experience can shed any light on weather this is a normal wear rate or not, that would be great!

thanks

Based on the service documentation, it seems your rotors will need to be replaced soon. From the pictures, it seems you are getting close to that 50% threshold for the wear indicators, but not quite there yet.

According to an SB from BMWNA from about a year ago shown to me by a master BMW tech neither pads or rotors are covered for replacement under the free maintenance as the standard brakes are. I would assume that they would be covered under standard factory warranty for failure though

I also noticed on changing pads at 4-5mm thickness that the metal pegs holding the material in place were starting to show. i am certain that will improve rotor longevity
