Over torqued the oil filter housing by 14 nm, how bad?
I over torqued the oil filter housing by 14 nm, how bad?
So I put another thread up you can see asking about 40nm vs. 25nm. My buddy has a digital torque wrench, so I asked him to set it to 40nm while I was under the car checking on my oil pan plug. He set it to 40 ft-lbs and handed it to me. I SHOULD HAVE CHECK IT! I twisted it (it did not seem to move though). Then when we were putting it away I notice he had it in 40 ft-lbs. (which is 54nm, 14nm more than needed) I freak out and set it to 40 nm. It twists about 2 inches around then the torque wrench clicked. The fact that it moved then clicked makes me feel a little better, but how bad is 14nm over? |

Some times it is hard to get a real answer around here.
If I am reading right you tried to mistakenly tighten it to 54 but when you rechecked you had less than 40. If so then I would figure no problem. I would check for cracks and then start it and check for leaks. I suppose you could remove the cap and check for problems if you wanted and still re use the O ring. If it doesn't leak I would drive it if it was mine. I can't figure why it bound up the first time you tightened it. You might have saved yourself a leak by rechecking it. |

It's probably fine, but keep an eye for gasket weeping.

If you over torqued it, the proper thing to do was to loosen it back up and then torque it again, not retorque to a lower torque value and keep torquing forward.
The cap moving 2" (which is a lot btw) is not indicative of a over torqued cap now being properly torqued. You may have ruined the plastic cap. The seal design of this is a radial seal and not a compression seal, in which case over torquing the cap on to the housing should not matter too much however, with the extra 2" of movement, you may have over stretched the plastic threads and or started to move the lip of the cap in to the oil housing. I spoke to my Engineer (we make similar designed oil caps on buttress threaded housings exactly like these), we test ours to 133% of max torque and then torque to fail. At 275 Nm, the hex starts rounding off so we know you're good there. What you have to be most concerned with is thermal expansion between the Al. housing and the plastic lid. He recommended for peace of mind to 1. loosen and retorque and 2. buy a new lid and replace the o-ring. |

The drain plugs are pretty weak. I didn't know the gasket fell off once and when I put it back on, I snapped the head right off just by barely turning it. I would definitely back it off. On my old E36 M3, the plug was hollow so when the head snapped off, the whole pan would empty!
