Using the stock tires in the winter dangerous?
So I'm in Indianapolis trying to figure out the best option here.
I have the stock Pirelli PZero's 275/40/R20 & 315/35/R20 configuration. I have 11,000 miles on these. Can I use these during the winter or is that dangerous? Would a local dealer likely give me a trade credit or with 11,000 miles, what would I do with them? My thought is to go with the Continental EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 to keep the long term costs down. And I would not have to buy 2 sets of wheels. My biggest concern is what to do with the PZeros. Could I switch to the DWS just for the winter and then switch back to the DWS 06 or is this really hard on the wheels (changing them out back and forth)? My wife was hinting at wanting to get another set of wheels for summer.. so I am not sure what to do right now. (she doesnt like the stock wheels as much as I do) 469M |

Winter and all season tires are designed to roll over snow much more effectively, whereas the summer tires will have almost zero grip. It is dangerous to try (look for AlanL video a few links below). I settled for Continental DWS06 tires. I waited until they released instead of getting the older DWS tires. They provide good grip so far in wet and dry conditions but I haven't experienced any snow yet. I chose AS tires instead of winter's so I could use them all year round. I kind of wished I would have picked winter's instead since I might buy wheels next year. No real point of having all seasons if you're not going to use them year round. At 11,000 miles on your runflats, I doubt you'll get much money for you're stock tires. I keep reading that they have horrible thread life. You may have needed to replace them soon anyway, whether you needed all seasons or not. Get a thread reader, it's $10 from amazon. If they're at least 4/10", you can sell them for cheap to someone who needs them for a lease return. It also sounds like you in an ideal situation. Your WIFE WANTS to get another set of wheels! Most members here have to convince their wive's to get another set of wheels. Get whatever tires you feel is best for your situation and start rolling on some 22's next summer! |

^^ He's 100% right. At 11K miles your stock tires doesn't have much life left anyways.
Refer to this thread about how summer tires are in the winter/snow. VERY dangerous and borderline suicide in my opinion. http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1195071 Alan |

I just take my 2016 X5 35i and it come with Prelli P zero on 469M just like you. In Oregon, there seldom see snow in winter and I plan to keep the stock tires during the winter. If I need to go to Mountain for skiing I would use chains.
That's my plan for this winter. P zero is super performance for summer so I don't want to replace it.

On a serious note, I'd heed the advice above and not risk using the stock summer rubber at all when it comes to snow. Avoiding even one fender bender will cover cost of the new tires.

Summer tires turn in to rolling plastic tubs when it gets below freezing. Despite having AWD it's VERY DANGEROUS. I'm glad my 19's are all-season. My suggestion for you guys with 20's is to bite the bullet and get a dedicated set of snow wheels w/tires. Afterwards, you will have a bunch of nearly worry-free fun in the snow this winter.

I would never run summer tires in the winter time anymore after taking my mother in law's X4 out for a spin during a snowy day. It is extremely dangerous! I guess I was so used to driving on winter tires that I didn't expect summer tires to be that bad, I tried to stop at a stop sign and because of the ice and snow on the ground, I rolled all the way to the other side of the stop side. I returned the car immediately and told her that she must have winter tires but she doesn't drive often. Scared the **** out of me.
On a dry day, you might be ok but it's not worth it man. All-season would be fine though |

Before I purchased my car, I had 3 "must have "mods
1. New tires 2. Exhaust 3. Power upgrade If I could only choose one it would have been been new tires. If you plan on driving in the snow, the summer tires will be a problem |

PZero comes with both all season and summer version depending on packages. My 2012 comes with all seasons but my 2016 with DHP comes with summer.
Find out whether you have all seasons or summer first. |

The stock summer tires are beyond bad in any wet or snowy condition. I swear I was hydroplaning a couple times and in the snow, I almost died.
I switched to the DWS06, didn't go with full winters since it's too warm where I live for the full deal. |

In the Netherlands people are driving RWD on summer tires in snowy conditions. Ofcourse wintertires are better equiped for snowy conditions, but I don't think you instant crash when you drive on summer tires in the snow.
In snowy / icy conditions you always have to drive carefully and even on wintertires you can slip on icy roads. |

No...it's flat out dangerous. For yourself and the guy getting rear ended when you can't stop. If you can afford to buy a 80k+ suv, go and buy some proper tires for winter. The neighboring province to where I live actually made it law to have winter tires during the season.

to be on safe side, just get set of wheels with proper tires. Dont take any chances driving with summer tires during winter.
