Great video.

I want one. My next X5 will 100% be the 40e.

Just got mine on Friday. Initial reaction is that it's great -- it's a real X5 without compromises. The real test for me will come this week when I drive it to work (20 miles one way) and see how much of that I can go on pure battery. Fortunately there's a charging station in my office garage, so I'll be able to be fully charged on the return, too. Even if my commuting fuel use is ultimately cut half, that's significant.

I will say that that transition between battery and gas engine is silky smooth -- no hiccup or power outage as the gas engine engages. And to me, it has plenty of power and torque when needed, especially for a heavy vehicle. Never once have I felt like it was under-powered. (I imagine like most drivers, I'm not red-lining it or taking it off-road.)

As a weekend driver though -- frequent trips to the grocery store, kids' activities etc -- the battery function isn't particularly helpful because it takes too long to charge between stops (I'm just using the supplied 110 volt charger at home). So for the weekends under those kind of driving conditions, it's just a regular X5 -- and there's nothing wrong with that.

The principal benefit for me to buy the X5e was that I was able to transfer my grandfathered license plates that allow me to travel on HOV lanes. If I were purely motivated by fuel efficiency, I would probably look closely at the diesel rather than this.

But given my fixed commute and HOV access, the X5e was a fit for me even if the battery is so far a little underwhelming. Can't wait to head out to rush-hour tomorrow morning!
