Question Which engine on 2016 X5 Xdrive i50?

I'm thinking of getting the 2016 X5 Xdrive 50i which is the 8 cylinder engine. Does anyone know if this is the "infamous" N63 engine which had all the problems which was also in the 7 series or if it is the same engine with mods to make it OK? Or is it a totally different engine?

I was at the dealer yesterday and they told me up through the past year they still had problems with the 7 engines and had to do all sorts of mods in the name of "Customer Care Package" to take care of frequent battery replacement, increased oil usage and therefore increasing the oil capacity, and crankcase oil leakage, to name a few. This is somewhat disconcerting to say the least.

Obviously if this engine has problems, I don't want to go in this direction, and might be inclined to go for the 35i, even though it doesn't have the response that I want.

LOL, I can't believe that's actually the name of a car.

Yes, N63. I'm not sure if BMW has the problems sorted out. Putting red hot turbos in the valley of a V engine maybe isn't such a good idea after all.

Its the N63TU which stands for N63 Technical Update engine. Lots have changed between the N63 and N63TU but overall its still the same engine design. There is a document on the web from BMW that documents all of the changes made in the N63TU.

My advice is to lease BMW V8's, buy the inline 6's. I've heard straight up horror stories about BMW V8's once the mileage creeps up.

I bought the 50i. Really hoping it doesn't start acting up once the mileage increases. I plan on keeping in long term.

@rocky12 that would be the N63tu where so far doesn't have problem.

same engine but runs hotter now. still uses the same crap valve stem seals, which ive seen being replaced already. the 50i is definetly not a long term engine to keep.
