M Performance exhaust worth the money?
My 2016 F80 just started production and I'm already thinking about the exhaust. I've learned
A lot from many of you on the forum about exhaust. My first thought was to get the dinan free flow exhaust but from reading many posts on the forum it appears the dinan exhaust was a let Down. From what I read and videos, it seems the M Performance exhaust is better but $5700 better? I've done a lot of research and it's hard to justify $5700 on an exhaust but if it make my car sound like my old E92 M3, I'm in. |

It's absolutely an improvement over the stock exhaust which was very good also imo. Some people love the stock and some people hate. My advice would be to wait until you drive it for a while and see if it's good enough. Then add downpipes to the stock exhaust which is another great improvement over stock. Then the creme de la creme is the Mpe w downpipes. I love mine and videos don't do any of these exhausts justice. It's impossible to purchase any of them based on that alone. You really have to hear them in person to plunk down the kind of money they require.
Also buy used on the forum if you can. You can save a decent chunk of cash as well as most of them are broken in by then also. Kills two birds w one stone. Be patient because they go as quickly as the come up on here.

Depends on how much money you have to blow on hot air.
As far as exhausts go, I believe the Akra and MPE have a pretty decent "bimmerpost approval rating". With the MPE being the less expensive of the two, its obviously the better value. Neither exhaust was "worth it" for me, once I actually got my car and really had the chance to experience and live with the stock exhaust. It sounds wonderful. And suddenly, the aftermarket exhaust did not seem as important. |

I agree with both posters above. Before I got the car all I read was that the car sounded like ass. When I got it I was wondering what others were talking about. I adde DPs and I'm pretty content. Would I like an aftermarket exhaust? Yes. Am I willing to throw down at LEAST 3k for one? No. I plan on keeping the car for 4-6 years so I'm sure down the road we'll have more options.
If you're wondering TPG's exhaust is under 3k and incudes DPs. It's the "bargain" exhaust. |

I think you can fix a lot of the "sound" issue with valve controllers. That and fixing the stupid cold start thing the car does (where it sounds like a lawn mower and is annoyingly loud but not in a nice way).

I'm in the same boat. I think hating on the stock exhaust is overdone. I like the sound of the car. I'm sure I'd like the M Performance better but there's other things I want to do to the car rather than spend thousands on new plumbing. I did however swap out the original exhaust tips - I now have black ones vs. the silly chrome ones that came with the car.

I actually likes the cold start up sound and stock exhaust sound is intoxicating in Sport Plus with valves open..For me, can't justify 6k on exhaust..

No, I did PLENTY of thorough, exhaustive research and have in the past enjoyed all the M cars I have owned. I know their products about as well as one can, but this car just didn't do it for me.

No doubt it is a nice exhaust, but it is very expensive. Even though I don't have my 2016 yet, I have spent sometime in a 1 hour extended test drive and the stock sound does the job as far as making it seem like it has an aftermarket system on it, but we all know that's because of the piped in sound.
If I were to get the MPE, I would for sure disable active sound. Since you have no direct control over the piped sound, except for changing the throttle setting, that piped sound can seem artificial and depending on the mood you're in and the time of day, it can get annoying. I would imagine adding any performance exhaust and keeping active sound would be way over kill for a daily driver.

There seems to be a lot of positive opinions on the AWE Tuning offerings (resonated / non resonated), you should check those out too. A few forum members have sold their Akra set-ups for these AWE options. It also doesn't hurt it's half the price of an Akra.

BMW even gave you a sound track to help but still no relief for some of you. MPE is your only way, spend the $5700 and feel better, not!

Cheapest way is to just remove them and have them powder coated. Some of the prices vendors charge are just insane but then again you're paying for a new set of tips also.
