My issues stems from the materials they used. On my calipers the pads slid on something called an abutment plate. Was made of bare aluminum. So this bare aluminum obviously corroded and when they did they bit onto the brake pad. This caused me to cook that rotor, the brake pads were destroyed from the heat I guess, and the abutment plates were obviously destroyed from the corrosion. So I get in touch with stoptech who sent me to a local distributor since I bought them 2nd hand. The distributor told me that it's recommended to either wash off the calipers or not run them in salty (winter) condition as this can happen. Ended up costing me nearly $1000 with parts/ labor/ and a fresh powder coat. Here's some pics that show the abutment plates Last edited by apexit; 01-30-2015 at 04:52 PM.. Reason: picss added |

The rotors look cheaper than stock, are they two piece? They also look smaller in height and width

The upgrade will come from the additional pistons, stiffer caliper, steel lines, and the large selection/availability of pads. Plus swapping the pads is quick assuming they don't fart on the abutment plate manufacturing like the set I had. Apexit - I also had issues with my abutment plates, but the corrosion is definitely a new one. Thanks, I'll keep an eye on them.
Stock brakes are already 380mm, so ST's 380mm rotors are not going to be any bigger, but maybe thicker. Pretty much every friction ring is ST's catalog is 380mm for front axle applications. It's not unexpected though. Only people I see going for this would be a track person. Any bigger and they could not fit 18" wheels which are preferred. Solid/slotted rotors are more boring to look at but they are super durable. |
