What happens when your engine blows up.
//M BMW Customer for life.
Why do we drive BMWs? Because they are the ultimate driving machines. No one knows that better than BMW and that's why they have the best warranty in the business. The iDriveEurope's F80 M3 broke down at 4,500 miles and was towed to Century West BMW. The findings were no good. Exhaust cam bolt broke, causing cam not to turn and pistons 1 and 6 to hit 2 valves. #BMW authorizes to replace engine under warranty. During disassembly, technician didn't have tool to fit clutch pressure plate. #BMW authorizes replacing clutch assembly. Big thanks to Century West BMW service. Best service department in LA. I used to love parts photos (I have my own of LR 4.6 Buick V8 album), never seen double disc sports clutch before.
On the other side, you've got new engine to break... Hope it all goes well. |

Wow...impressive array of engine drop pics, etc. Looks like you are on your way in the last pic. Kudos to BMW and your dealer for rectifying the issue.

Awesome and terrifying all at the same time. I remember seeing my '12 Mustang GT in pieces feeling the same way.

In my experience with serious production Ms in terms of looking closely at them, rarely have I ever seen something that appears so 'race made' as the front subframe. It doesn't even look production - it looks like a homologation special. I LOVE it....so beautiful.
So i have an unholy dislike of BMW VANOS servicing, but that VANOS system looks really easily accessible and not hard to service. Awesome photos. |

I'm a little more cycnical about stuff like this... I'll ask for forgiveness in advance, for this "sky is falling" post
You guys might think that this kind of service is great... Piston meetes valve, you get an entirely new crate engine! Amazing right? Not in my opinion. They're turning their master engineers into bolt-on monkeys. First problem with this approach is that we're PAYING for this kind of wasteful corporate policy direction. This "amazing service" isn't free my friends Secondly, this is rendering BMW master mechanics skill sets of diagnosing mechanical faults obsolete. Increasingly, they are just simply plugging their diagnostics tools into the ODB port and relying on the ECUs on the car pinpointing the issues. This doesn't always work terribly accuractly. I'm sure many of us have already been victim of this, resulting in many more "scan, order sealed replacement parts and replace" cycles until the problem is solved (hopefully). "Oops, problem still exists. I guess it wasn't that after all... Let's try again." Gone are the days skilled mechanics diagnosing issues and fixing them in the workshop.

It again speaks to the not insignificant discontent with BMW reliability. I'm curious if you tuned or modded this car resulting in this damage as well. 4500 miles and a new engine will damage the resale value. Pretty unacceptable in my book. If serious, you're more understanding than I would be. Yes, shit happens, but such a major repair should not happen so early in the lifecycle of the car (and it's not the first time such a major breakdown been cited on this forum). Lexus also offers a better warranty (6 years) - I'm sure several other premium car manufacturers offer better than the 4 year/50k mile baseline too. |
