BMW's new oil supplier

I read in the January Roundel that BMW switched oil supplier from Castrol to Shell as of the first of the year. Does anyone know why BMW did this? Will they replace the oil filler caps that state BMW recommends Castrol to caps recommending Shell? As they stated in the article, this could provide an after market opportunity.

Maybe the Shell oil could be had for cheaper? Maybe it is better for the engines? I'm not concerned and if they changed oil then thats their business. I'll keep using the same old oil I have for my car.

Shell had a lower bid and won the contract. I doubt there is any other reason for the change.

That's really interesting! It definitely seems like a business thing.

Either way, I don't use Castrol or Shell. Mobil1 is what I've currently been using and has been working well.

M1 0w40 cause they won my contract. I've been using it on German turbo cars for 14 years great success.

Mobil 1 0-40 but only because it is the cheapest oil that is on BMWs list. I change every 5K miles so anything acceptable to BMW should be OK.
