very cool! IMO still atleast a year or so away. I would think we would see it on a test mule somewhere first but then again maybe not. Either way I think its awesome and I would love to have it on my M4

IIRC laser lights were not approved for use by the DOT, so we (in the states) may never see it.

I'm sure if they come out on any M4, we'll be able to retrofit

Then we get the Horace upgrade crowd retrofitting higher intensity lasers to burn holes in the tires of people frustrating them in traffic... Pew, Pew. It'll show up on some tech page soon enough.
Why the need for oled in a taillight? Seems like platinum coating to me. |

The laser headlights are laser pumped Ce:YAG phosphor....the output is no different that a white LED, which also pumps the Ce:YAG phosphor with a GaN blue LED. No actual laser light makes it out of the headlight. Light output is generated from excited phosphor. I doubt DOT will have an issue with this. I am pretty sure i8 already uses it.
The only benefit of doing this vs an LED is size. You can scale all the optics (lenses) down to the size of the source without losing efficiency (Etendue limitation), which allows for smaller form factor (lighter weight). The cost will be huge compared to LED and also it will have much shorter lifetime (much more difficult to heatsink). I don't see a huge benefit of doing this vs LED, but it does offer a little bit more freedom in aesthetics. Current demo could have been done with LEDs. Nothing special, other than the name 'laser', they don't have an actual laser scanning the road in front. Same story goes for OLED. It's more expensive than LED and much more unstable for lifetime. Especially with harsh environments. Well designed LED tail lights with light guides could look very similar (suspended and thin 3D light fixtures) if not the same. |

I think I am definitely in the minority on not liking the look of them.
Why have the classic double round headlamps been replaced by some squiggly lines?

What part exactly is not approved by DOT? Are the angel eyes a part of the laser light system? If not I'm hoping at least the angel eyes will make it into the U.S. with OLED tail lights

Why exactly are they not allowed in the US? I read on ArsTechnica that the DOT only allows headlights to be JUST highbeam and lowbeam, is that actually the case or are there other factors involved?

Pretty sure those angels lights are LEDs with a light guide.
You can see the clear plastic light guide. Only the low beams and high beams are laser generated. And my understanding is that the US DOT only allows candles in jam jars or oil lamps for headlights. Last edited by Keca10; 01-07-2015 at 12:16 PM.. |
