Get Downpipes!!! (Transforms the car)
Why?
Improves sound without being too over the top. Brings back a bit of the e46 sound. Downshifts are slightly faster and better rev matched in sport plus or it just feels that way because of the improved sound over stock. You also gain about 20WHP but that's secondary compared to the sound improvement. Stop watching the videos online, the sound is not captured well and is very deceiving... Which Downpipe? Choices are: Akrapovic, Eisenmann, Gitani, Racewerkz Engineering, ER Racewerkz Engineering hands down. The work and craftsmanship of the piping and welds are perfect and the price is good too. Reach out to them for pricing and installation. They specialize in setting up racecars for the track and really take pride in their work. Located in San Dimas, CA. |

The secondary cats do a great job at controlling the smell...
Golfrr - Cold starts would be loud with an after market exhaust but it's actually very well balanced with the stock exhaust system. |

Actually, we need to find out how to code out the cold start. From my understanding, it's a programmed in misfire, along with some extra fuel for 30 second to light up the cats faster for cold start emissions testing. Get rid of that, and all is golden.

Yea, I was thinking that this weekend when I disconnected the valve plugs. It was loud as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck on cold start. Once the high idle goes away it's pretty damn quiet. Then I got to thinking there has to be a way to code that out. I know my GTR had no cold start within my tune.

this post seems like an advert? my concerns with downpipes are 3 fold.
1. smell - though keeping the 2ndary cats would help this 2. warranty- toast ur warranty 3. noise- i think a turboback is too loud, i wonder how the stock exhaust sounds with downpipes....

intersting. I would think it would not be much different but then again the stock exhaust would have more restricting and sound buffering material in it. I would love to hear the set up, I do remember the boys at EAS saying DPs even with stock is still very loud

OP:
You choose the Racewerkz downpipes "hands down", which is cool. But from your post I get the impression that you based your choice on craftsmanship and quality? That implies that you also have done a thorough check on all the other downpipes you listed, in effect done your due dilligence before making a choice. At least since you list all of those suppliers and justify your choice the way you do. I would like to hear your opinion on what made the other suppliers products fall through. Since the deciding factors was craftsmanship and quality of welds etc, I guess you can elaborate a bit on what was missing in that department on the other brands you listed? Some of those have a fairly high standing and good reputation, but from your post they clearly didn't compare favourably to your chosen brand! |
