Exhaust flaps open in SPORT mode or SPORT PLUS mode!
I noticed that my M4's exhaust flaps open in both sport AND sport plus modes. Either my car has different software (perhaps newer) out of the box, or there is a bunch of misinformation floating around.
I read a lot of "the flaps only open in sport plus mode" on this forum. I don't know if the flaps open even more aggressively in sport plus vs sport, but I do know that they are open at very low RPMs in sport. |

After many discussions about that in other threads, I start to think that there is differences between EU and US cars. I also find that EVEN at low RPM my valves are opened in S and SP like 2sporty. When I read some comments from others who unplugged the valves ******ions, they feel the car louder after the mod. In my case, I have no differences at low RPM plugged or unplugged. The only differences are over 3th gear and cruising.

+1 its got to be a software difference. My (US) M4 valves always stay open at any rpm in sport or sport plus. Regardless of the mode however they stay closed for a few minutes when first starting the car until it warms a little.

How do you know whether they are open or closed? Can you see them?

you can hear clearly hear it ... but its not true .. valves are closed in low rpm cruising on higher gear on the highway for example .. doesnt matter in which mode you are in.

They are always open in sport+. Very noticeable with MPE. Even at low RPM when I give it a blip you can hear the exhaust way more. Not sure about sport but I think they open and close but more aggressive then efficient.

This is what I don't get. In the do it yourself exhaust mod, the system is unplugged with the valves open. The valves are opened by driving it around in sport or sport plus, correct? But just before you shut the car off you are driving at low speeds and low RPM. But valves are open.

cruising in 7th gear in sport+, putting foot down and you hear the clicking, so the valves were closed! and you hear 0 diffrence if you are crusing on low rpm and changing through the modes.

On my DCT M4, my impression is that the valve control logic is the same in Sport and Sport+ where the valves are mainly open. The valves close at low RPM cruising in higher gears to minimize drone.
In Efficient, the valves remain closed up to around 4000RPM. |

Well... BMW designed it not like that. Anyway there is no way for you to know if they are open at highway speed at low rpm. They are supposed to be closed in any mode while cruising (note, not at low speed).
Also, people that did the valve mod, disconnect the valve so it stays open complain they have drone at cruising speed. That is axactly why BMW says they close in any mode at highway cruise speed, the second you press the throttle they open up again in sport/sport plus. Also to op: there is no difference between de behavior of the flaps in sport or sport plus, difference between the settings is more throttle responce and the turbo spools are being kept speed up longer in sport plus. I am not saying that a new exhaust is worth $4k but unplugging the exhaut valves changes nothing! it only gets louder on start up, idle and low rpm .. but still its the same exhaust note!

If you ever heard a car with this mod at cold startup, you'll understand. It shakes the house. The OEM exhaust is very well designed. So well designed that no aftermarket exhaust out there has been able to prove HP gain (ok, 1HP for $4k doesn't' count). With the valve open, our cars sound like an M should at any RPM/Drive Mode. It's not nice to call people's idea stupid (unless someone tries to fit 26" wheels in an M3). We're just all car lovers on this forum and I'm sharing "FREE" tips. |

UE and US spec are different, I think. Exhaust will open at certain RPM for Sport, and Open at any RPM for Sport+. I tested this a few times, pretty consistent.
