Gear rattle in neutral - sometimes
Hi all,
6mt here. I've noticed at various times at a stop, in neutral, clutch pedal out I'm getting a rotating, rattling sound from the trans area. Goes away immediately upon clutch pedal in. Only happens occasionally. 99% certain this is simply gear rollover noise. Just wanted to share this as I'm sure it'll pop up elsewhere at some point. Some vehicles due to gear design/flywheel design and even trans fluid properties will produce this noise. I haven't experienced it before like this, but wanted to share that I was getting it infrequently but on numerous occasions now. My guess is it's exacerbated by the cold weather.

Huh, sounds different to me than what I've heard before as a lightweight flywheel noise. Also, it's not consistent so this flywheel must be right on the edge of damping vs. lightweight design.
When I hear it, it has sounded different each time. Sometimes it's literally sounded like a vacuum line. Sometimes the consistent rotating rattle (which I associate with flywheel noise). Sometimes a light whine like a TOB whine. However, it's very consistent that it's at idle and goes away as soon as the clutch pedal is pushed in - so it's def rollover noise |
