OEM exhaust mod plus valve flaps open

I removed the connection to the valves last week. Car sounds a lot beefier below 3000rpm. Not much louder to be honest but a lot deeper at lower RPM. Should have come from the factory this way. Sounds like a 4.0L I6 instead of a 3 liter if you know what I mean.

Regardless of aftermarket exhaust, none of them seem too appealing to me. Turbos have really taken the fun out of that. I'd rather have the perforated pipes changed with solid pipes again on this model. Anyone do this yet, and did the exhaust get noticeably louder? I know the valve allows the gases to exit directly, but half the gases are still flowing through the center exhaust. Any incite would be appreciated.

Please spare me the merits of purchasing an aftermarket exhaust vs doing this.

Press to get them unplugged right ?

It's very easy to do. Just lie down on your back and get a thin flat head screw driver and wedge it between the socket and the connector on the TOP portion of where it plugs in. Pull somewhat hard. Have duct tape/electrical tape handy to wrap both ends to keep from getting clogging up from debris on the road. Well worth it.

Oh, before you begin grab your iPhone and shine the light into the tailpipe. Make sure the valves are open! If it is closed, it will stay closed after you disconnect it. I did it first with the valves closed and it was quiet. Had to reconnect the valves and redo it a second time. Takes 10 minutes to do both sides the first time, not even 5 the second time.

Yes that's all you need to do. It's quoted in this thread http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1006077

Thank you very much brother. I'm going to do it tomorrow. I have a little bit of trouble fitting under the car because it's lowered and well I'm not small in stature to put it bluntly lol. Hopefully the picture attached but you stick the flat head in on the side that the cables are coming from right ?

No problem. You see the top of the connection where there that plastic tab is? Place the flat head bit in-between. You can you feel with your finger where the tab flexes upwards. Then pull hard while holding the top and bottom of it with your fingers. Will be easy the second time you do it.

Question is, how do you open the valves prior to pulling the plug?

You're suppose to drive and get the car warm in sports mode(10 min ish drive) turn the car off in sports mode and the valves should be open then pull the plug.

The valve is open when car is off. So just unplug while car is off. Process takes a minute total.

I tried unsuccessfully to get them off last week and ended up shredding my hands in the process. It's very tricky to get to without the car lifted because it's a very tight space, and the edges of the underbody shielding are very sharp, so watch out. I'm going to try again, but with gloves this time!

By doing this does it leave an error light on the dash? If so is there any way to turn it off?

there wont be an error code on the dash but it will save an error code in the system that the valve system is not working ... had the same on my Z4. Just unplug it ..

did it last night , made a HUGE difference in cold start in a good way , i think the tip is to actually to use your fingernail and press the small rectangular piece and then pull with the other hand

Will it leave the yellow exclamation point on the instrument panel?

Just listened to video comparing the OEM exhaust with the M Performance one. Here: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1061040

1st is OEM with valves closed, 2nd is OEM with valves open, 3rd is MPE with valves closed, and 4th is MPE with valves open.

As you can see the sound signature is similar across the board for the two exhaust, but as you listen to the four different exhaust sounds it becomes more raspy and angry sounding.

I think doing the perforated exhaust mod to decrease sound reduction for half the gases flowing into the center exhaust we will end up with a sound identical to the performance exhaust. We just need a guinea pig to volunteer to do it. Anyone up for it? Would be nice to hear.

EDIT: Btw, the cold start up is LOUD with the open valve mod done. Louder than the E9x M3 with the exhaust mod.

I just completed this mod. Cold start is so much louder. Even when warmed up it is still louder than with valves closed. I found it a bit tricky getting the right hand side plug removed but other than that it is well worth the time.

Pumped! Didn't know this mod existed until I read this thread tonight.

Ran out to the garage a few minutes ago and knocked this out in about 25 minutes (including electrical taping and wire-tying things up). Just started it up and it sounds awesome. You can cycle through the M1 and M2 maps and now there is no difference in exhaust note - even from Efficient mode to M2. Very pleased. Now to take it for a longer spin and check for drone.

Super excited so far.

Thanks for the writeup!

Does this lead to any loss in performance? e.g. loss of torque in low rev range?
