Not a good day!
OK so I picked up my M4 Thursday and Drove her home today from Tampa. I bought her from the dealer as a demo with 2200 miles. The drive home is about four hours. The last hour or so I got on I95 and gave it a nice spirited acceleration. Then the problems started all at once, Differential locked warning. Chassis malfunction warning, no acceleration when giving gas, slow to gain speed, like the turbos had shut down. Cruise control warning and the AC would not blow fast at high setting. I called BMW from the car and they set an appointment to have it towed to the dealer from my home or I could drive it since the warning said to drive with moderation. I stopped for gas and was worried if it would crack back up, well it did and all warnings gone but the chassis malfunction warning. I was able to accelerate as normal again. Still not AC at high setting. Once home I turned off and waited about ten minutes and came back and cracked her up again. No warnings at all this time. Does this sound like a computer issue…? Also the M4 is a 6speed man.

It's been 3 days, can you take it back and just say no dice? I'd be seriously thinking about it. If this is week 1 what will week 101 be like u know? Demo cars all get beat on so I hope if you keep it the deal/savings were significant. Best of luck going forward

Those 2200 miles on that demo car are like 50,000 miles on most individual's new car. Imagine how many times that thing had been driven to the ground, miss-shifted, burn outs, and etc. Oh sorry OP take it back where you got it from and run away while you still can.

The demos at my dealer were treated with kid gloves under the watchful eye of dealer personel and I suspect that is true at many dealerships, but it definitely should be taken back to the dealer for complete resolution or replacement.

This was a demo used my BMW to show dealers, so it drove around the southeast, no customers, just dealer managers and owners...who knows.

I agree with all the replies about going back to the dealer, that'll be Monday. On the other hand I'm curious as to what everyone thinks the problem could be...to me it sounds like a computer issue. Thoughts?

I had the second one done and the car did improve, your car will be fine it's frustrating but I have read in the forums other members having the same issue as yours, with brand new cars most likely it's nothing major, do you have to take the car back to Tampa? Most likely this can be resolve at any BMW dealer I will just make sure to involve BMW NA so there it's some sort of records, best of luck your beast will be fine, if you are ever in Jacksonville hit me up we can do a little cruise.

Update…the dealer told me today that one of the throttle bodies is bad and sending signals that are causing the “warnings” and the malfunction issue. The other throttle body is working for both, when I turn the car off overnight this causes the warnings to reset. I was told if both went out the car would stop on the stop. They ordered one for overnight delivery and will install it tomorrow, then check for codes again. I’m not a mechanic and have no clue if this is just fishing for a fix or if it’s the real problem. More to come tomorrow…

damn this is annoying...i had the same differential lock error on my car. it reset along with the i-drive after i turned the car off multiple times
I haven't seen the issue since last night though. Did it only pop up after high speed acceleration the second/third go around or was it instant after the gas pump? Last edited by Stevens21234; 10-15-2014 at 05:52 PM.. |

+1 Sorry OP. Hope they're able to resolve this for you. The good news is your are covered by BMW so they'll fix it. But its gotta be a pain in the a$$ to have to deal with issues on your new purchase. Having said that, some demos are treated with kid gloves while others have been beat like they're rentals. I know I always test drive new cars like I own the car and that means push it as much as they'll let me.

In my experience demo cars are very well looked after and given to only senior dealer managers whilst test drives are controlled with engine warm up etc done before customer takes the reins.
Also any early niggles are found out and rectified along with the laborious running in process. These cars are made to be driven in anger and won't be damaged by hard use on the contrary healthy for the engine to be used as intended once warm. |

Update...this is the dealer write up: Customer asked us to check B12 26 14 as could possibly related. Throttle body internally damaged. Performed short test found several fault codes relating to the throttle body. Performed test plan for throttle body, said to replace the electromotive throttle actuator. Daigcode D1160 00000000 10 002. R&R throttle body actuator cleared adaptations and fault memory, test drove, check engine light did not reappear and vehicle operated properly at this time.
So I ended up with a new throttle body. Hope no more issues. |

Furthermore, at a weekend track event I recently did at VIR there was a father and son with Brand New Mustangs both with dealer plates (they owned the dealership). I talked with them a bit and they joked about selling the cars on Monday and hoped to bring them back in one piece. Last edited by kitesurfer; 10-17-2014 at 09:43 AM.. |

Curious though as to why you would select that car, discounted and how much from MSRP. To me it just seems that abuse just takes place when it's not yours, and the statement "drive it like it's a rental car" does create some thought of abuse whether damaging or not.
Showed up early to pick up my 04 6 spd MT from its first inspection , was on back street behind dealer and caught service tech doing a smoking burnout, car was new, he said he'd never seen that car in a manual tranny and wanted to try it out. How much could you take off price to make your 2200 previous mile purchase worth it?
