Loud ESS M3

Hello all,
Newbie here. I just bought a 2010 M3 with an ESS supercharger and I really need to quiet it down. It has a fabspeed X centersection and Turner straight pipes and a Borla rear section. I absolutely love it but I really need to quiet it down. I am used to loud cars but this is too much. Also, I didn't get the stock cats with the car. Im open for ideas on what to replace without breaking the bank. I appreciate your input!

You can start by swapping out the Borla with a used stock muffler ($150-$350 average) which would really quiet it down. If you care about cats you can wait for a used x-pipe ($500-$1000 average)which has the mid secondary cat/resonator and front primary cars to pop up on here.

Hey Mark! How's it going?

Can't really answer your question but it must be pretty loud because I remember your 993 has a nice little bark to it with those Fisters. I need to get some for mine but haven't gotten around to it.

To quiet things down you would probably have to swap out your x-pipe with another one with some resonators in it. The Borla rear sections are usually pretty loud, so you could swap that out with a stock unit or similar. But resonators will definitely quiet things down quite a bit.

An Australian M3

Try the FS section. Lots of good x-pipes that won't brake the bank.

Hi Rudy,
Its way louder than my 993! Im pretty tolerant but this is too much! Do you have a stock muffler I can borrow? Also, does anyone know if the rear mufflers are specific to E90 or E92 or will either work? BTW, this car is awesome!! Crazy fast!!!

Both the stock x-pipe and rear exhaust can be had relatively cheap.

I'm running a VT2-625 with stock cats and the ESS tune without a problem. I would email software@esstuning to get a definitive answer.

it will be easiest and cheapest to just put on a stock rear section, and you'll still keep all the power you have now.

I would get a OEM rear section and just swap the tips. It will quiet it down a lot and its good for daily driving. $200.00 on exhaust and $250.00 on tips for EAS.

I'd just get a used stock X pipe and put the test pipes on it, and leave the Borla in place!

Thanks for all the replies. I have some stock downpipes coming and Im going to borrow a rear stock muffler from a friend. Im going to try the rear section first and then go from there. What are these tips I can put on the stock rear section? That sounds interesting. Also, I may then sell the borla. What would it be worth?

Here are a few 993 pics. Its a 97 C4S, KW V3 coilovers, Forgelines, euro bumpers, GT3 CPZ Alcantra steering wheel, 200 cel cats and a bunch of other stuff. I love it!!!

If you are prepared to pay for the packaging and shipping, I have a stock rear end muffler that you are welcome to have for no charge. I could have my UPS Store call you once I get it over there and you could pay them directly for packaging and shipping. PM me if you are interested.

As others have said, swap out the Borla with a stock exhaust. I had the Borla with test pipes and it was extremely loud. I went back to just test pipes and I'm happy.

I would say akra or M performance rear section exhaust would give you the quieter sound you're looking for without sacrificing power. And yes, there is a difference in length between e90 and e92 rear sections. By the way, I want that 993

I have a 2011 E90 M3 w/stock exhaust. I might be interested in your Borla. Maybe we can work something out where you end up with mine and I end up with yours. PM me if you want to discuss.

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream.
