Car moves while in park
Has anyone had this issue? While on and in park, my car rocks back and forth ever so slightly, like it's trying to get in gear and go. It's a 2012 135i with DCT.

You should set the handbrake whenever you park. This takes the stress off the transmission and prevents the rocking motion. You should do this always on an automatic and a good idea on a manual.

I need to check mine. Mine has lunged forward when in D and foot on the brake. Try turning off your AC and see if it still does it. Idle jumps on mine sometimes.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was planning on taking it to the dealership for service, but if you are all experiencing a similar issue I may not. I will try the A/C and see if that is the issue. The ebrake also sounds like a good idea to prevent any stress this might be causing.
Do note this video was taken before I left from home (not upon return), so the engine was still warming up. |

Your car does this, and my car does this. You may try posting your question in one of the higher-traffic areas and see who else has this problem. My car doesn't demonstrate this behavior reliably, and wouldn't do it at the dealer, but it's there.

If you have a torque converter, that could be the answer, since the engine side is always in motion when the engine is on. If you have a dual clutch trans it could be that the clutch is making contact, from what I understand the clutch never fully disengages, but I could be wrong. In my AT vehicles I apply the park brake when parked on an incline to prevent excess stress.
I used to work with an ex RCMP (Canadian National Police) who told me they would just push AT cars out of the way if they were blocking fire hydrants if the fire dept needed it, and break windows if E brake was on/MT. It may have damaged the trans but it made me wonder how much play there is when in 'park'. It would be worth looking into how the park function brakes the trans, could be it has some plsy

With most auto cars there is a plastic gear or finger that engages when its in park to keep the car from moving (other then fluids being diverted in a loop to keep the car from trying to move). That's what get broken in the event you push the car when its in park.

My car (DCT) does this as well. If I have it in park on a hill it will roll back slightly. Like a manual does. My VW GTI with DSG used to do this as well. I just take it as a by product of the twin clutch design transmission.
