Modifications Don't Add Value to Your Car

A very interesting take on sellers asking for thousands of dollars over the actual value of a used car, just because it has mods.

True. But I have seen some modded cars fs here that are pretty close to how many would ideally set the car up. Sellers often ask for realistic, discounted prices for the mods included, so they're a steal if you (as a buyer) would have done those mods at full cost.

No doubt the sellers are still losing serious money, but at least when it comes to this community many seem to be getting a decent percentage back on mods when they sell. Quality mods aren't influencing value such that the car is worth less than stock.

So very true. In fact, I'd go so far to say that is some particular cases, it actually decreases the value... since the line of thinking goes: "well, the same guy who puts performance mods on the car, is the same guy who beats the hell out of it."

Which is why it's always more economical to part it out before selling. Although, even then, there are most likely more guys like me who look at specific bolts in search of wrench scratch, thumb prints, or knuckle blood...

Who was it that posted about his Lime Rock M3 going up in value because it was rare? He needs to read this story...

I posted this earlier, but I'll say it again. Having a few easlily reversible mods is fine, but originality is where it is at.

Take a look at any car market and it's original cars that bring the money.

Most people that are into modding know this, those that don't, find out the hard way

Great post subject.
People need to realize they cant expect their car to increase in value.
If that's why they think then don't sell your ride on an enthusiast forum.

Certain mods do increase value. Dinan S package cars generally sell at a premium. Certain OE parts from other desirable models (E46 M3 CSL parts) can add value.

But this is the rare exception.

Exactly, then you sell them so you get allot of the money spent back ...approximately 50 to 75% so your loss is not so bad, the fun in installing it, learning about your car, and making the car your special creation that is worth it for most of us....

I will say, I will never supercharge another car again...I did it on my Vette and honestly there is no removing that..and your target market is reduced ....its not worth it IMOP unless your a hardcore race track junkie...

In talking M3s specifically I think a good portion of people on this forum, if looking for a used M3, can appreciate some tasteful/expensive mods added which are being discounted during the sale of the whole car with mods. Yes, you'll lose some money but not as much with a well modded M3 and the right buyer. These aren't honda civic's with rice kits and exhausts.

I may take some things off and return to OEM, but I bet when the time comes for me to sell my ///M someone will appreciate my Brembo BBKs and Dinan parts at a discount

Always been the smart play to go back to stock and sell aftermarket parts separately

Yeah I've tried to sell modded cars before but the offers are always laughable. In the end I always go this route lol. Laziness never wins!

This is the only way to do it before you sell the car imo. But there are few exceptions of course.

I went a little lazy with my Z, but I definitely parted that biatch out before I traded her in. I left the sound system and brembo bbk, doe. I didn't have stock replacements

Unless you are selling your "modified" vehicle to another car enthusiast that can appreciate what has been installed...better off putting the car back to stock.

premium yes, but a fraction of what it cost the buyer when purchasing new...
I am a dinan fan. love their products.

i think over 2-3k in mods it's worth it to part out and then sell car/parts seperatly. especially wheels/exhaust because it's so easy to change out.

Very few cars will increase, especially modern days one. Only modern cars I can think of going up in value are 993 Porsches, the 997 GT3 RS 4.0, GT2 RS and Carrera GT and Enzo.

i would go this route. i regard this items as stealth mods that won't 'rice' up a car

-better bushings (diff, subframe)
-better mounts (engine, transmission)
-stainless steel brake lines
-keep stock calipers and rotors but change pads (pfc, pagid) and better brake fluid (motul, srf)
-oem e93 sway bar
-oem M performance exhaust
-engine tune-bpm
-PSS tires

thoughts?
