Popped my cherry

Well, I did what I promised myself I wouldn't do. Niello BMW in Elk Grove got a customer cancellation order on an F80 AW/B/CF. I looked at it this morning to take pictures and damn, low and behold it was a 6MT.

I had to test drive it. I am a three pedal guy and I had been waffling between the DCT and the 6MT. My better half wanted the DCT because she hated the clutch engagement and notchy shifting in my M5.

We took it out and I started in Comfort mode on everything. Damn, does this car shift smooth. I didn't really get on it, but did bring the revs up and it felt great. I switched the car to Sport+.

The people who said it is like unleashing Holy Hell are correct. It is definitely like a wolf in sheeps clothing. There was no notchiness (unfortunately for me), the clutch engagement was flawless, the auto blips were nice to transition to downshift. I loved it.

Now the true test. I pulled over and set everything back to Comfort and let my better half drive. She loved it. She said that it shifts so much smoother than mine, it's easy to know what gear your in and downshifting to. That was great to hear and basically sealed the deal.

We are getting the 6MT. Case closed.

Not an AW one. I just sorta promised myself I wouldn't drive one before we took delivery in Munich. It was all fine and dandy until they got the 6MT one.

I heard no "klunks", grinds or anything of the sorts. What I did hear on the passenger side was was wind noise at the A Pillar at 55 mph. Not liking that.

Maybe your wife should have sat in the back seat

You know she'd kick your ass if I told her what you said. I was actually the passenger. It was while she was driving. I think 55 was her top speed.

120 miles from the San Jose to Elk Grove.....just may be worth the trip for the 6MT test drive.

I have not seen the 6MT in person yet in the Bay Area.

We drove from Elk Grove to Berkeley just to see Yas Marina Blue IRL. Got to make that commitment.

Thanks, but I didn't buy it. Just the drive convinced me that choosing 6MT on mine was the right choice.
