Is Adaptive Headlight Illegal?

Maybe I don't understand it, but are the adaptive high beams on at all times in the adaptive lighting option? And would that be illegal? Is there any modification for the US version?

They are not on all of the time but most of the time. They create shine around vehicles in front so don't need to dip but will dip for oncoming traffic and in lit built up areas. Not illegal here (uk) but may be in some or all of USA

They aren't approved for road use here in the U.S., but I wouldn't worry about it. No officer is going to know the difference. You'll need to code your car to enable the technology though.

Adaptive vs. dynamic headlights

I think you're confusing "adaptive" with "dynamic". Adaptive headlights are merely ones that steer with the wheel direction; those are present on North American vehicles. Dynamic headlights shift the beam shape depending on other traffic (overtaking or approaching vehicles, or turning, i.e.. cornering function). Those do not meet our standards so that function is disabled here.

Greg, I should clarify that I was referring to the lighting package option here:

http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...modelcode=15TN

It definitely mentions the automatic high beams or dynamic headlights you refer to. So if it is disabled, is BMW mis advertising on their website?

Automatic high beams are active if you select the LED package. There is an /additional/ function (beyond high beam automation) outside of the US with that package. This additional function is coded out in the US. Search YouTube for adaptive LED and you'll see the extra functions that US does not receive.

BMW is not always consistent in its terms. The US LED "adaptive" headlight package includes the steering function and automatic high beams. What the rest of the world gets is the full "dynamic" or "intelligent" feature package as demonstrated in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dvPZ3H1Vm4.

Until DOT updates its standards, our only hope is to have one of the coding geeks remove the decoding BMW has done for the US market cars. Read through the technical forums and you'll see some have done this.

Yea. I'm pretty sure I can do it since it is just coding in VBA (I code in much harder languages). If I disable it though, wouldn't I get cited by the police?
