Oh sure, just tell the kid about a 60+HP/TQ upgrade for the 335i why don't you? Are you trying to get the 16-year-old new driver killed in his first car? Careful now.

He already has a daddy. He doesn't need another.

I haven't driven a 335, but I've driven a 328 coupe, and my 325 with sport pack. Neither of those are even in the ballpark of sportscar handling, either in slalom maneuvers, or steady state sweepers.

A slower car can be faster on a track if it exits and enters every single corner with more speed.

Many reviewers with credentials far beyond your own have been praising the 335i's handling in the twisties. It feels much more confident in the twisties than my 350z with LSD did.

FWIW -- I actually speak from experience, although my parents weren't the wealthiest, they did well enough to "give" me (their youngest son, the "spoiled one" ) a new (new at the time, and I'm dating myself here I know, but it's ok) Nissan 280ZX for my 16th birthday. Oh, how I loved and babied that car , but what did I end up doing with it? I wrapped it around a tree and totaled it when I was 17. Thank God I came out ok, but the 280ZX...well, that was the last really nice sports car I drove until many years later. $hit happens, especially when you combine a young driver with a relatively expensive and fast sports car...no matter how cocky or not. Just my $0.02.

if you put any money into modding a 328 you may as well have just purchased a 335i. the power return for your dollar just wont be there like it will if you spent he extra to get the 335. Unless you are talking about cosmetic mods.

I mean do you like speed, do you like the looks of the STI.

speed isn't going to make up for lost time because you're late. you end up saving negligible amounts of time when you speed unless its over a really long distance.

but in general... does the 328 have the power to satisfy that need to accelerate?
