I've been thinking the same. how do future generations improve on what we have? besides handling, straight line speed is definitely in it's way to a plateau in a few years

The Tesla S performance came out of nothing to do this 0-62 in something like 2.6 seconds, no? The plaid platform is to be released in a year or so, moving the bar again to +1000hp bringing the sprint down to 2.2s. The Taycan is also a pure beast! Because of the extreme low center or gravity, vehicle dynamics are also to be expected class leading. Next gen m5 will also come as a full EV probably with near to 1000hp (source: car magazine). |

Yes, electrification does add weight in exchange for performance, although Tesla surprisingly has the Model 3 which weighs similar to that of a standard 330i and M340i. The Performance model does weigh more than an outgoing F80 by a large amount, however the G80 reduces that margin. Through engineering weight loss is possible even with electrification, however it will depend on whether BMW (or any company) would want to put the development costs into making the car lighter. Seeing as how the M3 has gained 200lbs+, its unknown what BMW's priorities are when it comes to weight management. Still, I do think it could make an interesting M5. The M5 has never been light, that was always more the M3's job, the current M5 while lighter than the competition, is still over two tons afterall.

I had the opportunity to drive one of the pre facelift Competition M5's at the ///M Performance Driving School 2 years ago and the conditions were rain, overcast and 55 degrees. I was initially upset about how cool and wet it was until I stepped into the M5. I have never driven a car that has felt so effortless to drive and so planted in the rain. I went all out in this car on their track and it never one time let me down. It's acceleration, braking and cornering in the rain was absolutely tremendous. The engine felt like it was barely working and pulled like a freight train! Such a great sedan, maybe the best sedan ever built to date in an all gas motor car.

1. You can use the battery as being part of the chassis, providing more rigidity at least when you design the chassis as full EV from the start. 2. Electrical engines have a higher output to weight ratio and you can ditch the transmission entirely. 3. For full torque vectoring, no smart clutches and LSDs required either. 4. New battery technology promises more kWh/kg also. Full EV is a new paradigm and they still have to learn to play it well. Also mass production will enable much novelties at low costs! |

I know this car is all about performance, but is anyone else annoyed that BMW is now putting VW Golf (Mk7.5) headlights on their flagship sedan? I can't get over them, personally. What was wrong with the lovely ICON lights?!! Some of the decisions they are making these days are killing me.
