Buying M5, what to look for?
Hi guys, I've decided my 10+ year old daily needs replaced and after cross shopping the M5/RS7/C63 AMG/LC500 I settled on the M5. I will be buying used, probably want to spend ideally in the 55-65 range but would go up to 75 if a deal was there. I was also wondering what year I should go for to keep depreciation to a minimum, will be keeping 5-8 years ideally driving about 10k miles a year. I was wondering what options are necessary and basically what to look for before pulling the trigger on one.

I just got a 2019 M5 Comp with 21K miles for $68K.. great condition and uses dials (which I prefer) for displaying the speed/tach, which was changed in 2020. Given it's 5 years old, depreciation should be limited however I didn't buy this car as an investment.

Am I crazy to think that the F90s could potentially retain its value when the G90 comes out and people realize the whole hybrid platform is a sham?
The F90 is the last V8 ICE ... I would like to think our cars will become highly sought after as time passes and the only options coming out the factories is the hybrid / electric crap. |

With regards the F90 retaining its value, you never know. Stranger things have happened. I though, have bought this car for its pure driving pleasure. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it |

Wait, are you perhaps saying the newer (2020-2023) F90 M5s sound less vicious than the 2018-2019 M5s? That's interesting as I never heard that brought up in the various reviews I have watched and read.

There’s a well known YouTuber that reviewed the pre & post LCI models, and you can clearly hear the difference between the two. The newer versions sound castrated in comparison. They will obviously still drive amazingly I’m sure. It’s not an issue for some folks and as with everything, it’s all personal tastes. For me, I wanted that choice to have those pops & bangs there from the car ( when choosing the right mode ) as I deemed that as part of the character and charm of that generation car, just like the earlier Mercedes AMG E63’s were. The modern Sports version iterations of BMW, Audi & Mercedes seemed have all lost that side of the car. Big V8 engines or higher that sound like hair dryers when revved up at standstill in neutral…no thank you…!! Guess I’m an old school kind of chap but I do know what I personally like when it comes to my cars. I’ll take the older generation over the newer ones any day my friend |

Important to note that Europe has much stricter noise emissions standards than the US, so I wouldn't necessarily compare the two.

But only 2018 and 2019 have the round gauges in the cluster, which some prefer and some dont. A lot of the LCI items people really like, but i've seen mixed opinions on the LCI gauge cluster vs the 2018-2019 version. |

So in my opinion a 2020 M5C is the sweet spot. You get the older ECU calibration with pops and bangs, and newer gauges without all that LCI stuff.
This is exactly why I own a 2020 M5C :-) |

Drive them all then choose. Once they pass the look test, give it the feel test. My 19 felt stiffer and tighter than the LCIs I drove but the LCIs felt softer and more comfortable to a degree but not something I preferred. I preferred the nav screen, door sills, front grill, taillights and side markers of the LCI. The gauges I didn't notice but I think I like the pre LCI better.
In the end it came down to the fact that the particular car I choose looked and felt brand new. It felt incredibly stout and solid on the road, more than any car I've ever driven. It truly blew me away and made my X5M feel like a jalopy. |

I suppose I could of also checked out the 2020 model too as the new instrument cluster would not have been a deal breaker for me. The sound of the car was my main criteria and my preference for the analogue style digital cluster still did play a part in my choice. 😀👍 |

As a 2020 M5C owner myself, I can hardly disagree. But I would add that in the UK/Europe they must have responded in MY2020 (i.e. from. July '19 onwards) by mapping out the crackles from the overrun. The exhaust itself seems as loud and rorty under acceleration load as all other pre-LCIs from '18 onwards, but BMW took the nannyish route by dialling back the lift-off burbles for the 2020 models. That's a disappointing overkill, in a way, since AMG and Audi still appeared to get away with more overrun animation for their pre-'21 E63s and RS6s. Still, all Comps in Europe have OPFs anyway which is a bit of an acoustic muffler. But I can live with it, not least as my other daily/second car is a MY2017 (thus pre-OPF) MINI John Cooper Works, which pops and crackles far more exuberantly than frankly any stock-Euro-F90 would, and which in some ways is more entertaining at useable speeds..!
