Drivetrain Malfunction
Started my car this morning and it started and idled extremely rough. This message popped up on my screen and dashboard.
I then waited 10 seconds, and turned the car off. When I restarted the car after about 1 minute, the car started perfectly normal and I did not have any message on the screen. Car drives fine... Anyone else have this before? Is this just a random "computer glitch" or a sign of more serious problem? Thanks! |

I don’t mean to jump to conclusions; it could be absolutely nothing as you mention, but keep an eye on how the car idles. If you continue to experience some rough idle, that may be a starting point for diagnosis. If the car continues to idle fine, you probably have less to worry about.

Like ResIpsaLoquitur mentioned the DTML can be many things including the fuel pump, fuel injectors, plugs, coilpacks, or even fuel of poor quality.
Given the issues with the coolant tank on this platform, I would start with inspecting it for any signs of leaks with coolant stains on the tank. If you see this, possibly issues could be looming with coils-plugs. Sometimes a DTML can happen once and never return again .. I’ve had this happen. I would not rule out the fuel pump issue but will state, I had this issue on my 19’ M5C w/o any DTML. A scan tool can provide more specificity in regards to the code.

In case it’s not, Jose has given OP some solid advice about where to begin diagnosing this, if there is even anything to diagnose.

I appreciate all of your comments above. This is all very helpful. I had the coolant tank resolved (typical problem I saw many F90 owners have). I just ticked over 30K, so I am assuming it is time for new spark plugs as well. If this light/message appears again, I will keep everyone posted. Thanks!

You want a scan tool with BMW specific software that is advanced enough to see shadow codes. I would not assume the message appeared because your spark plugs are going bad. These tools don’t cost much and have been written about in threads you can find.

Well the light came on today again, horrible timing as BMW service is closed and will be until Tuesday haha...says I can still drive, but been through 3 cycles on and off, and light is still on. Rough idle and loss of power. From what I have read online, it seems like could be spark plugs? I am at 30K, soooo that could be the replacement time. I will keep everyone posted when I drop off Tuesday. Thank god for extended warranty until 2026!

Dealer got back to me.
"Injectors on Bank 2 need to be replaced. (5,6,7) Parts will be here tomorrow. Currently just injectors. If we replace injectors and fault persists, then we will also replace coil packs." We will see! Last thing I want is the other injectors to go bad next week, when I leave the dealer. Will keep you all posted. |

Glad it wasn’t a fuel pump issue. Parts take longer and the repair process is significantly more involved.

I’m not certain to be honest — mine happened with less than 1K on the clock on my previous brand new M5. Cruising at about 90, lost all fuel delivery, electronics, and power steering out of nowhere while coming around a dangerous blind curve on a major highway with no shoulder. Was stopped in the far right lane for a few minutes until the car restarted in limp mode.
Anecdotally I can tell you that I’ve seen more than a few on here needing replacement, but I want to say they were more LPFP than HPFP (which was my issue). But it’s nowhere near the level of say, the coolant expansion tank (which, remarkably, I haven’t had to deal with on either of my M5s some how).

Well, I finally picked up the M5 Comp today. They ended up replacing the 3 spark plugs that were damaged, due to coolant hose leaking into injectors. They also replaced the coolant hose that was damaged. They did not replace the other injectors, or the coil packs, as BMW will only do what is "needed" haha...
All in all, another great warranty experience. Saved me $4,200 in labor/parts. See pics below. Hose replaced was part #5. hopefully no one else has this issue! |
