I was going to answer a few comments here and realized: “this is an awesome thread where everybody is right!!!” Lol every point here is valid, just need to see what makes most sense at a time.
I was specifically going to say my beater 135i has been my only track/summer/ski-trip car for 6 years and I never needed another car. But I won’t say it’s reliable and would never recommend it (or anything similar) as an alternative. Appreciate the IS comment, that is exactly why I “like” my car. Always tinkering with something lol |

They’re recommending the E84 when they were RWD. Not the current Mini-based FWD version. Those will Be much cheaper than the new one, but much older. |

I'll definitely look into it. I'm sure my wife would be happy about another Bimmer after the Chevy suggestion I had. Spoiled I tell you...

Really? That's absurd. Does not appear to be the case here. A decent new car is well over $40K and the same one with say 50K miles is less than half that.

Absurd would be the accurate description here... Market is correcting however.

The E84 is great for what it is, it is a crossover so centre of gravity is quite high but the architecture is old school, it's based on the previous 3 series not the f30 or whatever the hell it was that felt bloated and middle aged. It also feels quite analog and the optional 3 lite turbo is a REAL sleeper, TBH the 2T has plenty of grunt but the 3T is just silly, in a good way. So it's no sports car but that bit of ride height will help in winter and the steering feedback is excellent. The 3T will inevitably need a water pump and the 2T i believe has some sort of chronic issue that has to be dealt with preventatively, engine related. |

I don't know all the BMW gobbdygook but the 2T int hat car needs something changed on time..... some chain or something. Let me hit the interwebs......
Heeeeeeere it is............. "It has been well documented in online forums, that thousands of early production N20 engines were manufactured with faulty internal plastic timing chain guides. Evidence indicates that defective polycarbonate compositions were utilized in the manufacturing process for the timing chain guide, and as a result over a very short period of time the rigid plastic guides would break down and deteriorate in the engine with little or no warning. Upon failure of these internal plastic components, the timing chain slackens (becomes loose) and "skips time" by jumping teeth on upper cam shaft sprocket, a phenomenon that causes catastrophic damage to the engine by changing the piston-to-valve synchronization and causing these parts to contact each other. In 2017, a class action lawsuit[4] was filed by several owners against BMW seeking redress for the faulty units. Plaintiffs in the BMW engine defect class action seek to represent a nationwide Class of consumers affected by timing chain guide and secondary chain failure and wear as well as several subclasses for states such as New Jersey, Illinois, Florida, Utah, New York, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, California, Wisconsin, Oregon and North Carolina. In 2018 BMW attempted to dismiss the class action lawsuit.[5] In 2019 U.S. District Judge William H. Walls partially granted and partially denied BMW's motion to dismiss claims that it sold vehicles with a known engine defect. Walls also ruled that the automaker cannot escape the suit entirely.[5]" |

I have an N55.
I’ve had an N20. The N20 got sold when it needed its 3rd turbo because of wastegate issues. The chain issue was fortunately covered by insurance. Otherwise, big money. The N55 had all leaks and water pump (but no more for the last 120k km, interestingly enough). I’ve done nothing but brakes in the N55 in the last 3 years. Drove 75k km in the period. Run from them. |

Sorry run from both or just the N20?
Assuming you take a few G off the listed prices, these are not bad deals. A quick tune and what, 400hp hatchback? https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/0...-c1dadd2789f3/ https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/1...-5eab4917a0e9/ Black one had a fender bender but nice car. I’ll stick to the Corolla Cross bet until Mazda proves it can last 5+ years without rusting. Has this been the case with new cars? Mazda has historically been really bad (along with Subaru, which I don’t understand the existence of as a brand and why they sell so much, especially here in the PNW/BC).

I agree, I just wasn't sure if they wanted another bmw. But might as well right? If I could, I would no doubt. But I never see snow so no reason.

Mazda would be my only option. Go for either a 3 Hatchback or CX-30 in my opinion, the interiors on those cars look and feel great and makes you feel like you bought a more expensive car than what you actually did. Reliability is also great, my eldest son has had an all Mazda household for years and has had no issues. Reliable, safe, stylish, and premium, and best of all drive great.
