As someone who keeps whining about the imminent death of the manual transmission at every possible opportunity, I have to say that I'm impressed with the performance and the review. C&D hasn't exactly been kind to BMW recently...

I still don't understand why BMW refuses to make an AWD DCT. Porsche has the PDK in every model and you can launch that car over and over and over and still nail the 0-60 consistently (bearing road conditions obviously)

I knew this car was going to be insane when I drove the regular g30 at the ride and drive event at COTA. The 540i felt like you were throwing around a 3 series and I can't imagine how crazy the f90 will be on a track. BMW has unlocked something with big heavy cars being able to drive in a way a car with that much weight has no business driving like. On a track, the x5m and the m5 won't be touched my its competitors.

Why did they quote the stats for the P90D? The fastest Tesla model S is NOT the P90D, its the P100D and it does 0-60 in 2.5 seconds (which is faster than 2.8 if my math still holds). Not sure who is Cherry Picking those statistics but its a pretty blatant disregard for the facts!

In either event, don't let their bad comparison distract from the more important revelation that the M5 is putting down numbers we never expected. - esquire

The AWD has two benefits... both on 0-60 and the MPH. Take the 911tt's... they also trap high although on a roll race you wouldn't think so.
The F90 will smash the F10 0-60 (maybe not at the drag-strip if properly prepped) and while it may be quicker on a roll-race, the gap will be much less than it appears on paper. Overall nice car... too bad I am neck deep in an F10 project! |

I'm sure if look hard enough we could find someone who can say that the VW Polo is the fastest car THEY have ever tested. But we shouldn't be knowingly propagating disinformation. That's what they call... Fake News (Good numbers on the M5 - the headline is broken though...)

For the last 9 months I have been totally committed to leaving BMW because of how bad the AC is in our X5s. I've even been spending more time on a Jeep Trackhawk message board because that has been my planned replacement.
However, now that I have been seeing all the solid reviews of the new M5, I am thinking that I might get dragged back in. I loved my F10 M5. AWD just means that I might get more that 8k miles on my rear tires!

I know. Its not my headline though. Its the title bimmerpost chose to give to the thread. My headline was only that the M5 put down 0-60 in 2.8. Haha.

Comparing the P100D to the M5 makes little sense. I think we can say that the future for electric is bright (pun intended). Electric is the future, but the 2018 M5 is one of the best applications of an internal combustion engine.
Also, correct me if I am wrong, but once you "launch" the car in ludicrous mode, you drain much of your battery. Different technologies... all awesome. |

I'm not buying one either, but anyone with half a mind can tell this is the best Performance Sedan ever made! It is unfortunately a bit ugly.

What will drain battery quick though (plus overheat), is high speed roll race. Forget the M5, I wouldn't even race a 530i on the freeway if I want to make it to my next destination.... Hence I normally drive my M5 when I go between cities and P100D for city driving. |
