slightly annoyed by this but looking forward to see more comparos between these 2.
I'm pretty sure that the M5 will have the edge on a track but than again, few owners will take their E63 or M5 on the track... Now has the first service been performed on the F90 ? Car mileage is showing 1.943 (3"50 on the video) There is this theory on this thread where some people claim that the car is de-tuned before 1st service... could it be ??? Let's wait for more tests but with AWD, little room to make mistakes.
I've owned faster cars, it's not all about straight line speed.

Did not look like he used launch control properly. Could not tell if the trans level shift was on 3 either. The mag testing protocols are more consistent.

Carwow is a magazine and is pretty darn consistent with results. It is to be expected. CarandDriver was doing different octane of fuel for the E63S and M5 F90, Carwow tested the cars at the same day, time, and with the same fuel. The E63 S is 50kg heavier, but it has a bucket load more torque and some extra power. I don't see this as a bad showing for BMW, rather it is quite impressive that it was this close.

To achieve the 10.9, Car & Driver did say that they sort of unlocked a special launch feature ("When fluid temperatures are right, the computer allows the engine to rev to nearly 3000 rpm, and the rear tires start spinning as if the M5 were rear-wheel drive. Release the brakes, the front wheels kick in, and the M5 pounds forward"). They also specified that the car will only do that a couple times, and without that launch it's not quite as quick.
So it wasn't gonna do 10s constantly regardless. |

He was with trans on level 3 and with everything on its most aggressive setting (as is visible when he shows the 0-60). Nevertheless, very good showing from BMW. Quite impressive actually. |

What's really curious to me is that Carwow tested the M760i on three separate occasions and it did 11.3s each time. Surely the M5 can't be slower than the M760i, especially in a quarter mile ? On the Autobahn from 250km/h maybe, the V12 pulls hard at high speeds, but in a quarter where the M760i can't even launch in 1st ? Something is not right

The magazines brought the M5 11.6 1/4 with RWD only ... 11.4 with AWD ? It can't be it, sorry .

Are people really trying to find escuses for why this AMG won? Guys, take it as a compliment that it was so close. AMG are playing in the big leagues now. You can comfort yourself by saying carwow did something wrong if it makes you feel better if it helps.
This is just the e class, imagine when that 4 door GTR gets on the road. |

Two reputable Mags tested the M5 at 2.8 and 10.9. Another at 3.0 and 11.1 Somehow CarWow’s M5 leaves before the AMG and is caught by AMG before they hit 60mph. Then gets an 11.4 from the M5. That’s the CarWow test numbers. It what it is. |

MB with a bit more torque and HP is the difference maker IMHO all else being equal; nothing a piggy can’t cure.

No need for such butthurt for the M5 F90's loss. It is expected. First things first. The M5 F90 11.4 1/4 mile is expected on that track. It is a dustier and less grippy surface than the optimal conditions of other tracks the car was tested. (Plus the day this was shot, it is clear it is a bit colder and not dry).
Secondly, a lot of American Magazines use 1 feet rollout (that can impact the calculation of the results). These cars are equally quick. Accept that. The E63 S edged it by a ridiculous margin. It may have done here, it might not do the same in other tests. Who knows? Who cares that 1 car is 0.1s quicker in the 1/4 mile. These cars are about the overall experience and sensation of driving, not drag racing like retard. |
